Hi all

What happens to your tax if you work in Seattle but live in Canada, specifically BC?

Thx

Hi

Do you already live in BC? If so how would you commute, sea plane, clipper? Or would you be working remotely, if so then that would be different again. It's a tricky one I'd speak to an accountant personally.

I can imagine you would pay tax in the US, but I wouldn't swear by it, would your extended medical benefits still be paid?

Thanks for your reply. We are currently in south east Asia. But we hope to move to Canada in 2014/15. DH's head office is in Seattle and he could very probably get a transfer. But we would rather live in Canada. He would hope to work from home sometimes, and stay in Seattle for a few days at a time sometimes. Just want to know if its even possible...

It is possible. But crossing the border back and forth is not fun or easy, unless he is both a Canadian AND a US citizen. Bear in mind that the US may refuse him entry at the border for any reason, work visa or not - it has happened and is very stressful. I would consider that really carefully.

Unless you are a Canadian citizen or have canadian PR with a US work permit it will be highly unlikely to be able to do this.

Thanks all. That's useful to know.

My sister lives in Seattle and my mother is in Vancouver. It is about a 3hr drive between the two.

My cousin lives in Ontario and is Canadian. He works here in the US for more than 2 months of the year so has a work permit. He was telling me two summers ago that colleagues were deported from the US after trying to enter without a work visa. They ended up losing their jobs because Company policy was for the employees to have a visa. I think he was on an L1 or L2 visa.

Seattle is not that bad when you compare it to BC. The taxes are also quite good.

Why do you want to live in Canada?

MooseBeTimeForCoffee · 26/01/2013 01:09

Possibly because it's a great country?

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 26/01/2013 01:19

I wondered if there were specific reasons.
