Stay at home mumming in the US

We might have a chance to move to the US. We have a 6 month old DC and a 2 year old DC and I am currently a SAHM. Just wondering what the culture is like and if it's similar to the UK, i.e. are there groups etc for the little ones and mums to get together? How do you fill your weeks?

Oh i would be interested in this as in similar boat although my youngest is 3 and my dd is at school. Have you googled it. I can't really find much for the area we are looking to move to, but there does seems groups for other towns

I lived in a large city and now rural, I never found anything like the playgroups from when I was in UK. I made most Mum friends through La Leche League (breastfeeding group) and then through the school and then work and the gym.
I did used to go to the park with older Ds to burn off energy each day, and being California that was a year round thing with occasional missed days for rain or extreme heat. Now theres www.meetup.com/ that can help you with a search for like minded people. I've never tried it

There was a massive SAHM community in NJ where we were. Totally the norm (in the affluent) burbs for NYC anyway. Not sure in the rest of the country. Meetup.com was a great help in finding groups.

It depends where you are moving to. In NJ where we live I sometimes think I am in the minority as a working mother. I don't know if it is the case or not but there are lots of SAHM. Lots of things for them to do. The Mothers and More group in our town is a great resource for a SAHM.

Again, I have to pitch in with 'it depends'. There are lots of SAHM groups in my area, for play dates and the like. But in other ways it's very different. There's no mums-hanging-out-at-the-school-gates culture, for one thing.

How are you guys doing in NJ? How did you go about finding your local groups? We are (hopefully!) moving there before Christmas as DH will be working in NYC. I will be a SAHM and probably wont have a car initially to get around!

Thanks for your replies. It would probably be Austin Texas. DH would likely be working long hours and may be away sometimes. I really fancy a change too from the place and culture where we live now but I am mindful I have lots of friends with little ones and attend lots of groups which keeps me sane and don't want to jump from the frying pan into the fire so to speak.
