Having one of those family-missing, ready-to-burst-into-tears, would-phone-friends-abroad-but-would-probably-just-sob days. How do you cope with being away from those you love?

Oh dear. Sorry you are having a bad day. Have you been living overseas long? Have you made friends? Have you got any friends or family visiting soon, so that you have something to look forward to?

I think some countries are much easier than other.

I hope you feel better tomorrow.

Sorry but I have no helpful words of wisdom. But I do hope you've had a better day and that the bad ones get fewer and further apart.

Can you do something nice for yourself? Do you have some food from home you have been saving - like chocolates, go for a pedicure...spend extra time / cuddles with dc if you have them...make some art to send to gp's....

I know this thread is a few days old, hope you are feeling better by now!

Hi there, hope you're feeling better. Had a similar wobble at the weekend so know what you're going through!
I think the best thing to do is something that makes you feel more like the you you were before you moved and can be done anywhere, eg DH is a keen cyclist so would go out for a ride in that situation. I would probably just go to a cafe for an hour or so with a good book and hopefully distract myself out of my homesickness.
I also run through a mental list of all the good points about the new place, eg living right by the river, more space than in the UK (we needed to move house but moved abroad instead) - so all the good things you'd rave to friends back home about. We still have great weather at the moment and back home it's cold and wet and rainy so that's always a plus.
I hope it gets easier for you. Every time I've lived abroad (and I've done it a few times, per DH and DD), I've gone through the hate it here stage, only to miss wherever it was once I'm back in the UK.
Good luck!

Thanks all. All your advice is much appreciated. I tend to have more good days than bad. Thank goodness for skype! My 1 year old has been a lovely distraction and keeps me focused on things other than my feelings but sometimes they slip through. I think I will join a yoga class too - might help with meeting people - and plan a trip to visit some family - even if it is in a years time. In the mean time I will look forward to a big glass of wine on Friday. (am trying to be good this week!)
