Shipping to Singapore - insurance?

BellaMummy · 04/09/2012 20:54

I think I remember someone advising on insurance for stuff being shipped....something along the lines of buying insurance independently of the shipping company. Is this the best move? Doing an initial shipment at the end of this week of stuff we will need when we first move into the apartment on 1 November and not sure what to do about insurance.

Advice please, oh wise Singapore m'netters!

Our shipments were insured by the shipping company but we never had to claim so it was all fine... Never heard of buying individual insurance, I think I had enough to do Wink

What Butterflies said. Good luck with first shipment, it's all happening then...

The shipping company will offer a policy with a partner insurer but you are free to get your own competitive quote.
Its easier to go with the shipper recommendation as they'll have a routine packing/unpacking procedure and tested claims procedure in case of loss or damage.

Agree with the above, especially laptop. Read the insurance terms carefully. I think I recall that our breakable items were only insured if the moving company had packed them. It would probably be quite difficult to find a separate policy that works alongside the moving company's terms and conditions.

We paid for the moving company's insurance and it was based on the value of the items being shipped. But we could pick and chose which items we included so we could make the insurance cost lower by leaving out some things. So for example, I didn't insure my wedding dress. Although it cost more than a small car I'm hardly going to replace it if it got damaged! (the wedding's been and gone!)

Some companies will just have different insurance amounts for total household value eg pay x for cover up to y, pay more for cover up to higher level etc. so you don't have to muck about trying to itemize your goods.

Thanks everyone. The shipping company's insurance it is then - you are all absolutely right when you say I have enough to do already!

Have had 5 weeks since DH left and I haven't done any packing at all. A tiny bit of sorting here and there, but that's about it. First I was distracted by the Olympics, and then I was feeling worn down with work and being on my own wiht the kids etc. But now I am in my organising/sorting groove and feeling very motivated. No more watching rubbish telly every evening with a pint of gin & tonic Grin
