Muslim toilet etiquette

Please explain to me a few things. With the water hose thing, how do people dry themselves? There is rarely any paper.

My landlord (lady actually I presume) left, amongst other things, disposable knickers in the bathroom. Is this common or quirky?

The squatting on the toilet seat thing. Footprints. Why?

Sorry, I sound so intolerant today - don't mean to be, just flummoxed. :)

Oh, that's interesting. So does the wedding actually happen in the bride's absence?

In the 2 I went to, the women and children were with the bride in a separate hall, they could watch the ceremony on screens via cctv. At the point of the equivalent of do you take such and such, the imam came in and asked the bride three times if she would marry him, said some more stuff (sorry not a clue what, don't speak arabic!) and then went back to finish the ceremony with the men.

Then the bride celebrated and ate with the other women and children, and the men totally separately.

I did love the hose when I lived in Saudi (cleeeean) but was frequently perplexed as to how to dry off. It was so hot there that you did get dry quite quickly, but still. I didn't want to put toilet roll down the toilet (because the toilets are easily blocked there) and they didn't always have bins in the cubicle at work.

I used to just wiggle my bottom ferociously and hope for the best.

HildaHotPants · 09/08/2012 14:54

Maybe oshuk? I change a lot!

Vanfurgstan · 09/08/2012 14:55

In some areas women dnt go to mosque but pray at home/where ever they are.
You may c ppl carrying prayer mats with them.

HildaHotPants · 09/08/2012 14:56

Has the other mner arrived there yet? She was packing up and asking advice a few weeks back.

Vanfurgstan · 09/08/2012 14:56

X-posts.

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 09/08/2012 14:56

Ah yes yellow, this makes sense - they block so quickly as they aren't designed for paper! (Lightbulb moment!)

I'm not sure tbh. There are a few here. Bangsar looks to be full of MN-types!

Yellow u can use a lota. Comes in handy

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 14:58

Most of the women I worked with in Saudi just prayed at work or at home. Never in public, which men often did (shopping centre or whatever, really normal to see men praying).

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 14:58

What's a lota?

Vanfurgstan · 09/08/2012 14:59

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lota_(vessel)

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 09/08/2012 14:59

wondered that too

Your post is not offensive OP - just a little naive (the Muslim reference is irrelevant).
I struggled like hell the first time in Asia - squatting is an artform if you have never had to do it!! Ladies usually carry things with them - not sure about the disposable pants though!

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 15:02

Er, not sure why I'd need a lota to be honest, since they had hoses in Saudi. And I don't even live there any more.

laptopwieldingharpy · 09/08/2012 15:03

ok, have fun ladies.
gmt +8. checking out.

conorsrockers · 09/08/2012 15:04

btw. 'posh' loos in China have a washing and drying facility. Bit like a hair dryer :o
Have to say I'm always to scared to try them Wink.

Vanfurgstan · 09/08/2012 15:05

If there are no hoses ppl use lota. Sorry I thought u missed the hose that's why suggested. Please ignore me.

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 15:07

Ah, ok, I see vanfurgstan! I totally misunderstood you!

These days I have a cloth. Nothing will ever replace the hose though.

LoopyLoopsOlympicHoops · 09/08/2012 15:08

So, anyway, back to the original question, if you are in a loo - not your own, there is no paper or kindly provided personal towels, what do you do? Drip dry? If ladies usually carry around paper, what about men? Are there a lot of soggy bottoms here?

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 15:08

Ooh conorsrockers, in Japan too. Imagine a clean dry undercarriage. What a luxury.

Lottapianos · 09/08/2012 15:12

The 'lota' is obviously the little plastic jug thing I have noticed in the homes of Muslim families. You learn something new every day! Smile

OwlLady · 09/08/2012 15:13

they had those squatting toilets in francethe last time I went, wtf are you on about muslims?

OwlLady · 09/08/2012 15:13

and we have had bidets in this country for years what is the difference in a and one word 'bidet' did muslims invent those too? Confused
