Kuala Lumpur (again) visa time?

DH has been offered and accepted a job in KL. His new school are being a bit, not quite as good as they could be about the visa.
How long does it take to issue a working visa? They have suggested arriving on a tourist one and changing it once we are there.
In every other country (bar the european ones) that we've moved to, a resident or working visa was sorted before we arrived.
TBF, he was a very late appointment so they have probably not been in this situation before.

Has all been cleared up now. We are going in on tourist visas that will be converted

Good. Glad it's sorted out.

That's how it was for DH when he went out to KL. His employer sorted out the employment pass after he arrived. When we joined him a year later it was the same thing; our dependants passes were applied for after we arrived.

A tiny tip - make sure you have some paperwork (contract or letter of appointment) from the employer to get through check-in if you have single tickets or returns that are over 90 days away.

Good tip. He will get his ticket from his employer. Me and DD are just looking for a flight at the moment. It's difficult, since we don't know exactly which day he is going. I assume his flight will be direct, since we must pay for ours, me and DD will probably take the scenic route Grin

Have you got your passport back now?

ripsishere · 08/08/2012 06:41

Yes, it came back a couple of days ago. Mine has rivers and waterways (I think) in it, rather than the birds the other two have.
I've a little list in my little head of what we need to bring. Mine is all mainly clothes and shoes. DDs is books. Since she has a barely used kindle, I think we can safely donate her ever expanding library to the school or chazzer.
Tis very exciting. DH just needs to go to the GP this afternoon for a medical and we are set.

rip, how come you have to pay for your own flights? If you don't mind me asking, (PM me if you want to reply), which school is it? Usually flights for the family are part of the package.

ripsishere · 08/08/2012 16:02

Not sure TBH. Would rather not say which school it is. I have to preserve a slight air of mystery.

Fair enough. But do make sure your DH has don some research about it - I know that the main international schools all have family flights as part of their package, I would be a bit wary about one that doesn't. (Hark at me, I sound like the TES forum here)

MarjorieAntrobus · 08/08/2012 18:51

Yes, I was surprised by that. I think that the school my DCs attend give flights to the whole family of the staff member at the start and end of the contract.

Loopy and I have (previously) established that we are connected with different schools so we are giving you a sample of two schools here. Wink

ripsishere · 09/08/2012 06:17

Thanks. We've had extensive experience of the way International schools work. Some are much better than others. This one seems fairly good, not as good as the one he worked for in Bangkok though.
Now, furnished or unfurnished. I've been looking at some property sites in KL. I think we need to go for furnished, since all of our belongings are staying here. Are the rents negotiable? We are being accommodated for two weeks to enable us to find a place to live in which is fortunate. OTOH, all the schools in Asia we've been with in the past have actually found somewhere for us.
Swings and roundabouts I suppose. All the flats seem to come with a pool. Is that standard?

rents are definately negotiable. also landlords over there seem to bend over backwards to get your business.

buying new items cleaning furniture painting etc you just need to ask.

all the condo's we looked at had pool facilities, they will tell you this in the details anyway.

ripsishere · 10/08/2012 06:28

Smile DD very excited at the pool idea again. She virtually lived in ours when we lived in Bangkok.
