Moving to Vancouver

This move has been in the cards for awhile now, but now that we have a LO we have decided to go ahead and do it as we don't want to raise him in London.
I've been looking for information about child care in vancouver and don't seem to be able to find any nurseries for our DS who is going to be 9 months old when we move Confused
Where can we find a good neighbourhood to live that has good nurseries/schools and at the same time is also close to downtown where we'll both be working?
Also any tips about living in Vancouver would be really appreciated as we don't know anyone with children in the city?

An old old friend of mine lives in Yaletown, which sounds like the sort of place you are looking for. her son is now about 5 yo and my freind is picky about enducation - she was a lecturer in law. She works in a law firm and has an apartment which is about 20 mins walk into downtown - she used to work there too and never bothered driving to work. I've been over and visited her and recommend you have a google of Yaletown.

ironic I type that "freind is picky about enducation". Hmm

Thank you ThePan :)
Would really appreciate information about shipping and banking, if anyone can help?
Feeling a bit aflutter just from thinking about the move. We've been wanting to do this for such a long time, but niw that it's becoming relity my stomach is turning. Any useful tips is really appreciated (also, a lot of hand holding)

My friend works full time at her law practice and is unfortunately now a single parent, so is really busy.(!).

IF you PM me some time with bits of detail I can enquire with her, if you like. She is a Vancouverian, though lived in M/c for quite a few years where she lectured. Been back home for about 10 years now. She can probably help with links and what's useful, and what's not.

Thank you! I'll pm you as soon as I can :)

I left Vancouver last year and am currently visiting for the summer. We lived in south / east Van,which we loved, but the cost of living was too much for us (we are both teachers) so we went overseas. Vancouver is amazing, but we struggled to have any quality of life.
We had cheap daycare at $1200 per month, but we had been with the woman for years - I would expect to pay closer to$1600 in Yaletown. and there is a daycare shortage here, so you need to start registering for places now - most people do it as soon as they find out they are pg. Also mat leave is one year so most places don't take babies under one. If you can wait a few months, you will have more options.
For a 2 bed apartment, you will be paying between $2-3000 a month in Yaletown.
If you don't have jobs, I would go to an ERC ( employment resource center) and get some resume and interview help, job searching is different than in the UK, and they offer free services.
Not sure if this is the info you are looking for, and i don't mean to sound negative, Vancouver really is a fabulous city!
I would try craigslist for a better idea of availability of flats and daycare.
Sorry about the typos, typing with my left hand on iPad while holding a sleeping one month old.

We lived in Yaletown when DS was born nearly 2 years ago (not there now). We were lucky and found a huge 2 bed apt. in Yale town a block away from where we were working for 1800CAD - but it took a lot of luck to find/get that, so you'll be looking at at least that in rent if you want to live close.

I don't know about daycare, but day to day, I liked being in Yaletown as it was 5 minutes away from the centre of town/work/the river/parks/library etc. Very clean, very safe (forgetting the riots).

Living is very expensive - food and booze are unbelievable. On the other hand health care is very good. We made do with public transport and zipcar (cars you can hire by the hour) but TBH I think life would have been better with a car of our own - if for no other reason than shopping - otherwise you're restricted to the even more expensive in town supermarkets, expensive and restricted home delivery, or bulk buying and lugging home from Costco.

Mobile phones will give you a shock too - we were unable to get a month to month contract and had to sign up for 18 months for about 50 dollars a month (and that was pretty cheap!)

Lastly, try and transfer your card/bank account if you can. You'll need a candian account (most of which you seem to have to pay monthly for) for a card and chequebook (which you need to pay for - but will probably need for paying rent), and they weren't going to give us a credit card at all, but conceeded that if we left a deposit then we could have one with a tiny limit. In the end we called up American Express who we used in the UK and were happy to give us a canadian card.

Yell if you want a Brit's advice on something and I'll see if I can help

Oh, I should mention, over the other side of downtown - West End - you're further out, but it had a bit more of a relaxed, hippy atmosphere (and a Safeways I think) - might be worth a look if you're not sure Yaletown is for you.

MiauMau · 20/07/2012 21:59

Thank you all for your replies. Although it woud be really close to our work, I'm not too sure about Yaletown, is it child friendly? Would the daycare centres there have nice outside places for the kids to play?
Maybe it would help if I give you ladies a bit of my background story.
We currently live in a lovely place in London, dulwich village. It is very green, quaint and safe for children to play outside, the downside is that it's 1h15m (on a good day) away from the studio where we work.
We never wanted to raise a child in London and as both DP and I had the priviledge of growing by the sea and mountain in our home country, we decided that we wanted to give the same to our LO, hence our move to Vancouver (also there is a lot more work in our area than in London).
So, any suggestions about nice neighbourhoods with good childcare?

We just came back to Vancouver after 11 years in London. Back with 2 kids and a dog. We lived a single and couple live in East Vancouver and Burnaby before, but when our son was born 13 years ago, we moved to North Vancouver. We are back in North Vancouver - mountains, beaches, schools, restaurants and cafes are all here. And you can use seabus to downtown or bus if you don't wish to drive yourself. It is not cheap but I wouldn't leave anywhere else. PM if you would like more info.

Kahu · 01/08/2012 04:40

MiauMau - will send you a PM, let me know if you don't get it!

MiauMau · 01/08/2012 22:19

Alisa75 and Kahu I've sent you both PMs!
