It is a lovely place to visit etc and I am not suggesting any people here are going to be getting into trouble but as it is topical in the news it needs stating
Singapore has the highest number of dealth penalty sentences for drugs offences (Amnesty International ) Just possession carries a MANDATORY death penalty Being a foreigner will be no defence as 25% of the population are foreigners . I am quite sure our Mumsnetter are only going for work/travel etc but this is place is heavily into Law and Order. I know 2 lots of people out there who do not like this aspect of it. It appears to be so Westernised but it not famous for democracy. I would be very careful to check all luggage etc

The more I read your posts the more you really don't make sense... You start off saying one thing, then when people pull you up on it, you start on amnesty?!!! Then when people start saying well when in Rome do as the Romans, then you agree and start saying that's why people move to away from the UK?!! Wtaf???

Rollercoastercat. As someone who has only ever lived in the UK but is about to move to Singapore with DH and two DSs I LOVE your post! What a positive take on things. I am going to bookmark it and read it in my few and far between wobbly moments! Our fab friends live in Singapore already (they grew up there too) so we know what a great place it is. But I love how you summed it up! Thank you. Going to bed with a grin :-)

OP, am wondering now are you a teenager living in Singapore?
I don't expect a straight answer, but if you are, I hope you will read this.

Drugs are available in Singapore. Not readily but we know they are there nonetheless. And not only in squalid shophouses along geylang road.

Please steer clear.

Apart from the obvious death sentence, you have to consider another risk: doctors in Singapore are not trained to deal with serious emergencies related to dealing with intoxication & overdose because they don't know what substances are out there.I have a friend who is an anesthesiologist in a major hospital and it is not so uncommon. Toxicology tests are routine for a reason.
The situations arise regularly and staff have little medical and psychological training to deal with overdose or addiction.

There is no proper sanitary message. Not that I've seen and heard of anyway.

And considering the ridiculously predictable ongoing debate between AWARE and the MOE on sex education here this is unlikely to change anytime soon.
It's not at all surprising due to the prevalent missionary ethos Singaporean schools.

The big lowdown of raising children above 12 in a place like Singapore is that they are too sheltered and not at all streetwise.
There is no education about dangers of drugs apart from the usual patronizing message adressed to lower class minorities linking drugs crime and unemployment.

Anyway, since the object of this post seems to be a "research", my only advice is educate yourself and steer clear.

Hope you appreciate a straight answer.

Roller coaster, respectfully, I Totally disagree re: political correctness.

I think that comes across clearly in my previous post!

cheeseandpineapple · 08/06/2012 01:59

Rollercoaster, not sure when you last lived in Singapore but you can buy chewing gum there now, at least you could when I lived there a few years ago, you just had to register and sign for it at the pharmacy!

Pupsie, it's a fantastic place to live, hope you enjoy it, good luck with the move.

OP... Biscuit

Drug possession means mandatory death sentence - I don't think so though Singapore does have one of more prolific, if not the highest death, penalty rates per head. Did I read you right that you don't even live in Singapore but have just visited?

AmberLeaf · 13/06/2012 18:07

Honestly, it is only when you leave the UK that you see exactly how manipulated and controlled British people are. There is a reason why we expats read CNN and other papers - to get the real news rather than the BS you read on BBC. If you want to talk control and manipulation look no further than the British Government of this and past years

You really don't have to leave the UK to discover that you know!
