Breaking the journey from Munich to Rotterdam - Phantasialand?

Just wondering if anyone has been to Phantasialand? Is it more for older kids or suited to a 6 ad 4 year old? It is relatively expensive - is it worth it?

Also the on site hotels are really expensive - any suggestions for somewhere nice but cheaper to stay just the 1 night, with 3 kids (the 6 and 4 yo plus a 1 yo)

Longshot maybe but worth asking, and this seemed as good a place as any...

We went there 18 months ago just after Christmas - it was VERY cold (!) but we had a great day. Ticket prices were cheaper than usual because it was winter, so I don't know how 'worth it' it would be at the normal price but we did really enjoy it and found plenty to do.

Our kids were 7 and 3 at the time. It was a little bit more limited for the 3yo, the main problem being that he got a bit upset when his brother could do things that he couldn't - but it was ok with some careful management and DH whisking the 7yo off discreetly to do the other stuff :) Check the height limits on the website and you should be able to see how much your 6yo can do, though I imagine it'd be the same as it was for a 7yo.

Really though, I'd highly recommend it and it was fun to enjoy the theme park type stuff without having to give all your cash to Disney :) And it'd be even better if your kids can speak German, as some of the video type attractions were no good for ours.

Not sure about places to stay as we were in Cologne for a few nights, but I know I did look into smaller guest houses or B&B type places and I think there were several around, maybe 20 minutes away.

Thanks Weta - 4 year old is enormous :o so would be able to go on any rides his big sister can. Not sure if it wil be too big a place for a "breaking the journey" visit now - had read a few Trip Advisor reviews saying it was small, but further investigation suggests they must have meant compared to Disney Land, as it seems to actually be huge...

Still pondering, may stop on the way back.

Thank you!

I think we arrived at 10 or so and stayed till about 4pm so it was quite a big day... there must be other places on your route though, zoos/aquariums etc?

I went on a wet and quiet day - absolutely deserted. Dirt cheap - we thought the meals in the restaurants/coffees/snacks were all so incredibly cheap - very impressed because of course it's one of those places which has you over a barrel once you're through the gates.

The on-site hotels looked very quiet and quite isolated. I reckon anywhere locally would be nice.

Thanks Alpine Pony sounds worth a visit, am thinking breaking the journey back will work better with a full day. Dh is wimping out now though and just wanting to do "normal" breaks and find a playground/ soft play type thing for the kids to run about, rather than anything more. We will see I guess. I think Phantasialand sounds good, although the 1 year old will make rides for the big ones slightly less easy...
