ideas for a "Great Britain" day at DS' preschool

O wise ladies of Mumsnet, please help the world's least creative mother with some ideas for hosting a national day at preschool.

We are a British family living in Russia and my son attends a small international pre-school here. This term, the pre-school is devoting one day a week to each student's native country, and the parents are being asked to prepare some sort of short programme on the country in question, i.e., sing national songs, play national games, provide a typical national snack, etc.

Next Wednesday is Great Britain day and as the only British mum at the pre-school, I need to form a plan to rival the rather spectacular programme that the American mums put on this week. Thing is, I am absolutely hopeless with anything like this - I detest party-planning with a vengeance and have not a single creative bone in my body.

Has anyone ever done anything similar? Would be massively grateful for any ideas about what I could do. Thank you!!

Ooh, cucumber sandwiches and scones are excellent ideas, thank you!

DS is 4 and we are in Piter. The pre-school is entirely made up of ex-pat kids - mainly American, Korean, Japanese and Turkish kids. All "lessons"/activities are conducted entirely in English so most of the kids have at least a passive understanding of the language.

The cricket/rounders idea would be fab but unfortunately outdoor time is very limited and I don't think I would have time to get anything going in the 15 minutes they spend outside at lunchtime, and the indoor space is too small for me to attempt it.

I am thinking more along the lines of trying to teach them some sort of "national" nursery rhymes. Am wondering if Oranges and Lemons would be a good typically "English" example???

Ring a ring o roses would be better (and historical if Mums are interested)

Hopscotch?

Yes! Ring a ring or roses is excellent. Will put that on my list! Thank you!

I think hopscotch is fairly international, isn't it? Certainly I have seen Russian kids playing it (or something very similar).

Do something royal wedding/ queen oriented if you want to outshine the Americans Wink

Bunting, food as said before and royal wedding on YouTube

Definitely do something Royal. They'll love it Wink and you can have them make crowns as a crafty activity, there's the nursery rhyme pussy cat pussy cat about looking at the Queen....

Games - Oranges and Lemons, Ring a Ring of Roses, Pass the Parcel with British sweets

Rhymes - Changing Guards at Buckingham Palace by AA Milne (can't recall proper title), London Bridge is Falling Down

Food - decorate plain biscuits or small cakes with icing in shape of a crown and smarties/jelly sweets

These are brilliant ideas, thank you all so much! I will be shamelessly using all of them.
