CANADA mumsnetters: can you help me read the CAT test result (primary school)

Hello all,

DS just sat the canadian achievement test (CAT) to enter the canadian international school where we are (in asia).
Am only familiar with the uk sats tests performance scales so i can't read the results!!!
I cant find any online resource with info.
The school has not provided any info other than
"he has been given a level (12) and grade equivalent scores of 3.2 (reading); 4.1 (reading) & 4.3 (maths)"

Anyone knows how to read those numbers.

TIA

Ooh blimey i'm not sure, try posting on Canada2012 you might get a better response. Which province are you in?

eternallyoptimistic · 06/03/2012 02:08

Hi
I am in Ontario.
The level 12 doesn't mean anything to me, but the Grade levels are used here. A score of 4.1 means he us slightly above what would be expected for a Grade 4 student (born 2002)
Hope that helps a bit?

I'll email a link to this thread to a couple of teacher friends and ask if they have any idea.

madwomanintheattic · 06/03/2012 04:21

no idea what the 12 means, but the GE scores are as eternally optimistic says - they just read as grade levels (so school years). for example, here in alberta, a current grade 3 child would be born between 1 March 2003 and 28 Feb 2004. A grade 4 child would be born between 1 March 2004 and 28 Feb 2005. So you just need to work out what grade he would be in for his age to get a comparison. ie if he is 5, he's flying, if he's 9, he might be slightly behind. so he is reading at the level expected of a child just entering grade 3, and doing math at the level expected of a child just entering grade 4. (they can't be directly extrapolated to sats scores or uk school years as the curriculum is different with an older school starting age in canada) i suspect they may be normed on ontario dates though (which i suspect might be 31 Dec...)

i think mine have only sat PATS (the provincial version) though, so can't be much help really! it's much more common for children to stay back a year here, there are kids of all ages in my kids classes Grin

Thanks for all the replies.
He is currently UK year 3 so grade 2 right? ( born march 2004) and tested to enter grade 3.
So seems like he is at worst where he should be and at best, slightly ahead in maths andvreading.
So all good, he stands a chance of making it to the waiting list.
The school situation is absolutely awfull. Am in HK

yep, in alberta he would be one of the oldest in grade 2. Smile because he will have had an additional year of schooling, it's sensible for them to put him in grade 3 anyway. there seems to be a lot more flexibility here wrt grades.

are you he-ing at the mo until he gets a place then?

laptopwieldingharpy · 07/03/2012 00:15

No he is in a fab little school that offers tuition for kids waiting for a place in "bigger" school. 8-12 in a class with teacher and assistant.
He loves it there but he is very sporty and would really benefit from having proper sports facilities and a bit more peer pressure going forward.
A bit too sheltered in this environment.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer!

Sorry, have not heard yet and am going out of town for a week tomorrow - will PM you if my teacher friends have anything useful to add.
