What do Americans call sleepsuits?

BabCNesbitt · 21/02/2012 16:07

...and vests, grobags, etc? OK, 'onesies' seem to be vests, but I'm trying to find footed sleepsuits for DD and have no idea what I should be searching for!

(I'm also trying to remind myself to refer to strollers, diapers, pacifiers, cribs... seems everything baby-related has a different name in the US!)

I have no idea why I have decided to find out the answer to this as I don't live in the US, but I decided to use Amazon.com to find out the answer, and it appears a onesie is a body/ vest:

www.amazon.com/Gerber-5-Pack-Onesies-Brand-Underwear/dp/B001LQR4GU/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1329851216&sr=1-1

a search on romper brings up sleepsuits but mainly footless ones

www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_7_6?url=search-alias%3Dbaby-products&field-keywords=rompers+0-3+months&sprefix=romper%2Cbaby-products%2C142

The new term coverall pops up for the subsection of onsies with feet

www.amazon.com/Robeez-Baby-boys-Newborn-Beaver-Coverall/dp/B004TG38GY/ref=sr_1_14?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1329851312&sr=1-14

puddlejumper it sounds as if perhaps American's themselves don't know what to call them! Perhaps it varies by part of the US!!!

Order them on Amazon OP :o

BertieBotts · 21/02/2012 20:09

Can't you just go to a clothing shop website and navigate to the "baby/nightwear" section?

BertieBotts · 21/02/2012 20:10

Like this: www.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=76748

LinzerTorte · 21/02/2012 20:12

I have the opposite problem - I can never remember what to call onesies in British English (to me, a vest doesn't sound like something that can have long sleeves).

DD1 had lots but I can't remember what they were called. OshKosh calls them jumpsuits here.

Thatisnotitatall · 21/02/2012 20:13

Onesies, footsies... these are not real words are they? :o

BertieBotts · 21/02/2012 20:14

And these: oldnavy.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=51738

Babies R Us

Target

I was going to say they don't seem to sell them in multipacks like we have here, but it looks like Target do. Theirs are all mixed up with the vests in the bodysuits section.

All of these shops use different names too so no luck on the single keyword front.

Thatisnotitatall · 21/02/2012 20:15

Who dresses thier child in a "bunny ballerina sleep set" complete with tutu for bed? :o

Why did I click on the link anyway, may be the question I should be answering!

NorksAreMessy · 21/02/2012 20:17

Don't know about US, but in French they are grenouillettes - baby frogs!
How cute is that, little frog suits?

swanker · 21/02/2012 20:17

Also 'Gymmies' are gymboree all-in-one sleepsuits.

LinzerTorte · 21/02/2012 20:17

Must admit I've never heard footsies being used Thatis, but onesie is certainly very common! DH even uses it in German (along with "wipes" and other baby-related words that were never part of his vocabulary before DD1 was born - so he learned them all in English).

swanker · 21/02/2012 20:18

target often have v nice inexpensive packs of sleepsuits.

BabCNesbitt · 21/02/2012 21:18

The reason I was asking was mainly because I got most of DD's newborn and 0-3 clothes on eBay UK, and I was wondering what it was like there (moving to NYC next week!), but had no idea what to search for.

Thatis, those Zutano ones are lovely! (Pricey, alas, but lovely nonetheless.)

In Canada they're called sleepers... not sure if they use that in the US too though!

roary · 22/02/2012 08:47

Sleepers in Canada and the US. Vest/bodysuit is a onesie. If you go in to a shop and ask for a sleeper they'll know exactly what you want.

Grobags are still quite unusual, our relatives are all v impressed with ours and my used ones go to my SIL in Seattle. Baby sleeping bag should do the trick! The crib/cot thing is quite confusing, what in the UK is a cot in the US is a crib. (To the point that my UK edition of What to Expect the First Year clearly did find and replace on the word 'crib' only to have 'descot' instead of 'describe'

roary · 22/02/2012 08:48

I have never in my life heard footsies. That is what adulterous people do under the table at dinner parties before swapping keys.

AlohaMama · 23/02/2012 05:51

Had the same issue with naming troubles, particularly as we do so much online shopping here and you don't know what to search for. I think the footie sleepsuits just aren't so common here, nor grobags. Old Navy do a couple
but they call them 'sleepers'. Incidentally they have a bigger range in store than online.
The only grobags I've seen are Halo Sleepsacks (I get these online too). Now I just get mocked when talking to family back home for referring to stroller/crib/diaper etc :(
