Has anyone taken a cat to Singapore?

We are contemplating moving to Singapore and we have a 12 year-old male cat in good health. Has anyone taken their cat and how was the trip and how did the cat manage over there?

I've known people in SEA to have cats (expats) but not sure whether they were taken there. I'm sure someone will be along soon to help or advise on an expat forum to post on.

I did the reverse and brought mine back from se asia- malaysia rather than singapore- but knew people living in malaysia who had brought their european cats with them.

I worried a lot beforehand about how they would manage the journey, but it actually went really smoothly. They were well looked after by the airline and arrived in good condition. They were able to have towels and blankets in their carriers and I think would have burrowed underneath and slept once in the air.

They needed rabies injections and blood tests several months before they travelled, there was a fair bit of paperwork to do, then no quarantine, but I think the rules may be different now and singapore would have its own requirements anyway. They have adapted absolutely fine to the change of climate etc.

Something to bear in mind in singapore is whether you would be living in an apartment, but it should be possible to find one on the ground floor with access to outside space?

I am quite worried about the actual journey especially as it is such a long flight. I'm also wondering how they manage with the local small wildlife.

Sorry, I know this is a serious question and I am a cat owner but your title has tickled me (and I'm not even pissed). It's just that it is so random and specific. Grin

Good luck with Singapore and the cat.

Acinonyx · 12/02/2012 21:26

Grin I know there are a lot more things I need to know about moving to Singapore - but my primary concern seems to be my cat!

I'd jump at the chance- don't let the cat be a sticking point. Smile

Acinonyx · 12/02/2012 21:38

I know I'm a crazy cat-woman - but I CANNOT leave my cat. Fortunately, the UK and Singapore have a pet passport agreement.

Well that is perfect then. I'm sure he'll be ok. Good luck.

Do you know where you'll be living in Singapore? Are you sure you'll be able to afford somewhere with accessible outside space/are you prepared to compromise on location/finish to get this, and if you can't, can the cat deal with this?

Just another thing to think about. We brought our cats from Dubai (where we adopted them) to HK. We are in an apartment so they are indoor cats and I am quite conflicted about it. On the one hand, I think cats need to be able to go outside. On the other, at least they are alive which they wouldnt be if we hadnt brought them with us. However, the situation is best described as "far from ideal"

RealLifeIsForWimps · 13/02/2012 05:57

Duh- just seen that SCS already made the apartment point. Sorry.

Merlion · 13/02/2012 07:25

We bought our 2 cats here. Pm me if you want more info for fear of boring everyone to deathGrin. It was a sticking point for me too!

southchinasea · 13/02/2012 11:11

I couldn't leave my cats either. They really seemed absolutely fine with the actual journey, it was more stressful packing up the house around them and keeping them in for the few days before they travelled!

Do you know whereabouts you might be living in singapore? There are apartments in quieter locations, where you would be able to let the cat roam outside- I'm thinking of for example some older blocks in Pasir panjang, just because that's the area I know. But it would depend on the landlord. Or there are houses with gardens, for example the ex army houses around tanglin school- wessex estate- would be easy to have a cat there. I think it would be possible to find accomodation, just means you would have a bit of a hunt, and quickly rule out high rise flats in very central singapore.
My cats had to be a bit wary of the local wildlife in malaysia, there's a chance of yours coming across a snake or monitor lizard but probably not too often. Mine loved chasing little geckos!
Good luck with your move.

It will be quite a while before we know if we are going or not (3-6 months probably). If we do, we'd like somewhere with a garden, rather than an apartment. I suspect that choice of school would majorly influence where we would live.

I will be back with more sensible questions if we get further along this road.
