Just moved back to Germany - remind me what I have missed!

We have just moved back to Germany after 18 months in the UK. I'm embarking on my first big supermarket shop later and need reminding of all the yummy things to look out for. I've already discovered Philadelphia with Milka chocolate in the little supermarket round the corner and have consequently put on two stones in two days Grin What else have I missed since we've been gone - suggestions for new stuff or old favourites welcome.

Mezzo mix -with or without vodka.
Almighurt
Pfefferbeiser

I get really fed up with the food here so I hope you get lots of posts that I can steal ideas from :)

Weissbier. Nuremberg sausages (autocorrect is refusing to let me type that in German, keeps coming out is nurse burgers. Brezen.

Can you tell I lived in Bavaria?

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 19:40

oooh, hello Scooter. We are moving to Munich soon. Where are you?

have to second Brezeln.

Spätzle

Scootergrrrl · 18/01/2012 19:57

We are in Gutersloh. The children are loving the snacks - Jumpys, Koalas, Corny bars - and I'm loving the wine and cake Grin What's Brezeln and which aisle do I find it in Real?

They might be called Laugengebäck in Gutersloh. Near the bread. VERY yummy.

yellowraincoat · 18/01/2012 20:01

The wide and dizzying range of Ritter Sport.

yellowraincoat · 18/01/2012 20:01

Oh and paprika flavour crisps EVERYWHERE. I hated that it was the only flavour in the beginning but now I miss them.

pearlgirl · 18/01/2012 20:06

Hanuta!, Brezeln, Käsespätzle, Hefeweizen. I am hungry and jealous now.

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 20:08

ha. Agree with the crisps. They are yum and I miss them now.

Scootergrrrl · 18/01/2012 20:26

Am happy to send out crisp parcels to MNers in need. Beer might be a bit heavy... Hanuta are probably manageable, as would be Ritter Sport!

I missed whole shops when i left Austria - Aldi, DM, Tchibo. Now I am In Germany and I was unbelievably excited when a huuuuge DM opened up next door to the Aldi I used.

Food wise - those little crouton-type balls you put in soup - backerbsen - Ithink they are called - only way I could get my youngest to contemplate eating soup.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 08:36

How are you doing?

juststrudel · 19/01/2012 08:51

Fine thanks just found out we will be in Bonn a little while yet - which is fine for us. Not as exciting as Munich tho'. We were there briefly just before Christmas and even in the dark it looked lovely and I can recommend the gluhwein Wink

My girls still talk about your cute dog!

ErnesttheBavarian · 19/01/2012 09:03

alcohol free beer, another vote for Brez'n, ooh and Käsesemmel. yum

YOu just missed all the fab Christmas goodies of course. I can't start listing them or I'll put on 10 kilos at the thought.

Sweet mustard and Weißwurst. hmmm.

WHat's hanuta? What have I been missing out on?

MmeLindor - you're moving to Munich! Whereabouts? WHen?

ArtVandelay · 19/01/2012 09:38

Hanuta is like a square wafer biscuit with the layers stuck together with nutella. They are pretty good. I'm scared of weisswurst - sausages should be brown! Have you had a half metre feuer wurst at the Xmas market? I love those.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 09:52

Strudel
Yes, it is a lovely city. Almost looking forward to it now.

Ernest
In the summer, although DH is moving before that. Hoping to get a flat in the city, we have looked at one in Schwabing and are waiting to hear if we have it.

admylin · 19/01/2012 11:14

When I moved back to the UK for a short time I missed the bread even though when I lived in Germany I thought I wouldn't be bothered. T

The Vollkornbrot is much better than in the UK. And you don't have to just eat paprika crisps as you can now get big bags of salt and vinager (Chio chips).

Gator · 19/01/2012 11:31

I'm another who was a bit disappointed by the crisp selection when I moved here - but once you've tried Currywurst crisps there's no going back :)

Art I find Weisswurst a bit weird too, but once I'd gotten over the fear they turned out to be quite tasty!

ErnesttheBavarian · 19/01/2012 12:49

Ah I know hanuta, just never bothered to read the name.

MMeL, good luck with flat - Schwabing's only about 15 minutes from us.

bread is v. good, tis true.

yellowraincoat · 19/01/2012 15:31

Oooh I miss Berlinerweisse, both grun and rot.

xlatia · 19/01/2012 23:16

Anyone who's in the former eastern part has to try vita cola - sooo much better than coke!
