Lindor no more; leaving Switzerland in 7 weeks

MmeLindor. · 08/01/2012 13:37

Countdown starts now.

Thought I would start a thread where I could whinge and moan to save my husband having to listen to me.

Sorted:
Flights, ferry, hotel (still need one in Metz), movers,

Still to do:
insurances, cars, mail forwarding, sale of furniture, clean house (dear GOD, the Swiss are fussy), cancel utilities and phones, check dog's vaxs and pet travel stuff.

What else do I need to think of?

Moving to Scotland till summer, then to Germany.

Oh nooo, I had to do an "end of tenancy" clean on a 2 bed house in the UK and it nearly killed me! It took 8 hours of solid work (and it wasn't dirty, I swear). Every surface had to be washed, buffed and smear free. I nearly went blind getting skirting boards spotless. Whatever you do enlist help!

I would go for the gorgeous central flat if you're not there for long. You'll save on travel! Grin

MmeLindor. · 12/01/2012 21:14

My Mum is coming over so I won't be alone. Am dreading it, tbh.

In Germany you just have to leave a flat "besenrein" - swept clean.

OP posts:
hupa · 13/01/2012 08:55

I´m glad your mum´s coming, it would be a nightmare doing it alone.

Going back to the flats- do either of them have access to a garden? If your dc are used to playing outside all the time in Switzerland it would be a bit of a shock to be confined to a flat. Mind you having no garden would be the perfect excuse to spend hours in the beer garden in the Englischer Garten.

CardiCorgi · 13/01/2012 13:45

I'm in the centre of Munich and the only time I regret it is when we want to go ski-ing or for a long bike ride as then we have to get out of the town. On the other hand if we were outside we would have to commute in for work every day.

I assume that you have found the mine of information that is Toytowngermany.

Feel free to PM me if you want any more information, I can't help that much with schools apart from to say that I believe the European School is quite hard to get in to unless you work at the EPO; dd is too young for us to worry about school at the moment.

MmeLindor. · 13/01/2012 21:05

Hupa
The Dc are old enough that the lack of garden would no longer be a problem and getting to the age where the transport situation would be an advantage of living near town.

Corgi
Thanks, may well PM you if we need info. DH used to live in Starnberg so we are not too lost, but that was 20 years ago and before we had kids.

We phoned and asked about the possibility of getting them into the EU school but it looks unlikely that they would get in.

The flat that we looked at was lovely but i don't think that we will get it. The landlord didn't look keen, particularly when she saw the dog. We will see what tomorrow brings. We have one more in Schwabing to see tomorrow.

It was at first advertised at 1350? and they have raised the rent by ?200. And it is only two bedrooms.

admylin · 17/01/2012 08:38

How is it going MmeLindor? Did you find a nice place?

I wish Besenrein was always Besenrein in Germany. We have a landlady who thinks her Altbau flats should be handed over in better condition than she lets them, there's a fight every time someone moves out and half of them end up in court!

Don't forget to join the Meiterverein.

CardiCorgi · 17/01/2012 13:03

That sounds a bit pricy even for Schwabing, unless the rooms are absolutely massive or you are overlooking the Englisher Garten.

Starnberg is nice, I often go out there to row, but I don't think it's much cheaper than Munich itself. The same goes for anywhere to the south with a good S-Bahn connection.

There are other schools, Munich International School and Bavarian International School come to mind, I have no idea about fees or how good they are academically though.

Best of luck with your search. By the way, I've enjoyed reading your blog posts from Switzerland.

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 19:45

Admylin
we have been lucky that our landlords have been ok so far.

Corgi
Yes, it is a bit pricey and she is asking for ?8k Ablöse for kitchen and two 3door wardrobes. From Ikea . And the kitchen is not big. We have wished her luck and said that we are not willing to pay that much. She only bought it a couple of months ago, and wants new price for it. I said that if we were going to pay ?5k for a kitchen, then I would bloody well choose it myself.

We are still waiting to find out about the other one, which was 3 bed, also in Schwabing, similar price.

And we have two others that I found this week. These are on Kapuzinerplatz which is not quite as nice as Schwabing, but still city. Not sure though, cause they are next to the Paulaner biergarten - I don't suppose you know it? It is opposite the Arbeitsamt. Wondering if it is very loud. Lovely flats though.

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 19:51

Cardi
thanks for the school info, but they are slightly out of our price range.

MmeL - Wow just seen this - Good luck! Munchen - lucky you am Envy. At least there is no language barrier for all of you. Have fun apartment-hunting.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 08:37

Ha. Just waved at you on the other thread.

Thanks, am getting a bit excited about it all now.

OP posts:
hupa · 19/01/2012 11:31

My brother used to live on Kapuziner Str right next to the Biergarten. The road is very busy, but I never noticed his flat being noisy when we went to stay. It was handy having the Biergaten so close to hand Grin.

Friends of my brother had a similar experience with an Ikea kitchen. They were rather naive, but ended up paying 10,000 Euro for a supposedly designer kitchen to secure the flat. It turned out it was actually from Ikea and probaly didn´t cost that much when it was new.

Hope you find something soon. My brother is trying to buy at the moment, but everything reasonable gets snapped up really quickly.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 11:54

Oh, that is funny Hupa. Wonder if it is the same building. Will PM you, if you don't mind.

Still swithering about going to see it, cause we would prefer Schwabing.

OP posts:
MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 13:00

Oh. FECK. Got an email to say that we are not getting the flat in Schwabing.

Am seriously pissed off today. Why can we not have some good luck for a change?

OP posts:
admylin · 19/01/2012 13:20

Sorry to hear that MmeL.

You could have more luck nearer to the time you want to be moving. You would have the added advantage of being able to take on a contract at short notice wheras alot of families have 3 months before they can get out of their old contracts and obviously don't want to pay more than 1 month double rent.

hupa · 19/01/2012 13:21

How annoying. Did they say why?
I´ve PMed you about the other flat.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 19/01/2012 13:22

MrsMcCadbury. (shiver - vile chocolate)

FrauStollen. Wink

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 13:24

Admylin
We are pretty flexible, cause the company pay for temp accommodation. Would be good to have it done and dusted though so that DH can move right in in March.

Cadburys seems a bit of a comedown after Lindor.

OP posts:
QuintessentiallyShallow · 19/01/2012 13:25

You must move to Norway. Then you can be FruFreia.

MmeLindor. · 19/01/2012 13:28

Good idea, will put that to DH.

:)

OP posts:
mousyMouse · 19/01/2012 13:32

FrauMilka good luck with the move. hope your children settle in well in school. I hope to move back to germany when the dc are already older so we don't have the gymnasium gedöns to worry about.

MmeLindor. · 20/01/2012 12:23

lol at Gymnasium gedöns.

Bloody hell. The flat we wanted is gone, the other one I found yesterday already has so many viewers lined up that they are not making more appointments. I need to be glued to immoscout.

OP posts:
CardiCorgi · 20/01/2012 14:19

Oops, sorry, didn't want to be undiplomatic.
The kitchen thing drove me crazy when I was trying to find somewhere. Usually the seller can be beaten down in price a bit because of the hassle to them of taking the kitchen out and either selling it separately or storing it, but all the same, it seems to be a situation where nobody is happy.

What size place are you looking for? I can keep my ears open for you.

Surely it is FrauRitterSport.

MmeLindor. · 20/01/2012 14:32

FrauRitterSport makes me sound a bit fit though...

Looking for 100qm (ish) 3 bedroom apartment in Schwabing, Lehel or Altstadt area (or nearabouts) if possible Altbauwohnung.

Just like everyone else really. :)

Which seems to be the problem.

OP posts:
CardiCorgi · 25/01/2012 09:55

There is nothing sporty about the caramel nut Ritter Sport, I can tell you that! They got their name as being practical to put into your pocket when watching football matches.

I've got my ears open and will let you know if I hear of anything.
