Hi, just wondering if there any mumsnetters that live in Christchurch? We arrive on 5th January, moving out for hubbies new job working on the Christchurch rebuild. I've got a 3 yr old, 19 month old and am 23weeks pregnant so could do with some friends when we get out there! Think scale of what we are doing is just starting to hit me and I'm feeling a bit stressed!

Lucky bugger! It is nice out there - very pretty (although there was the earthquake of course). We have been on hols there a few times.

The people are nice and friendly and I am sure you will feel at home straight away.

wahwahwah · 08/12/2011 15:35

There are some great Thai restaurants there tool I will rack my brains for the name of the one we go to...

Hi, changed my nickname now, but was JennyV. Thanks Rillyrilly, trying to hunt out areas at mo for when our temp accom ends (in upper riccarton), so any advice would be gratefully received. Hope earthquake wasn't too bad, wierdly I said to DH about 3 hours before it happened I was still a bit worried about another earthquake happening, but that at least it seemed to be calming down...
How old are your children? Have been coping ok? My eldest is 3 and quite sensitive, so I do worry what she'll think. Mind you the earthquake rebuild is why we're coming out so have to take rough with smooth!

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 02/01/2012 12:16

Hellooo, sorry I have taken so long to reply. We buggered off on holiday on Boxing day, a camping trip round the South Island. Got back to quite big aftershocks and DD (2.5) not happy about it. And they are likely to keep on coming.

You are probably in the throes of packing/leaving now, so I hope I am not too late.

I wouldn't reccommend moving to the Eastern Suburbs (I would say that includes Burwood, Parklands, New Brighton, Bexley, Bromley, Aranui) as they were hit badly in the earthquakes. Having said that, where we are is an oasis of calm amongst quite a lot of liquefaction. Some of the eastern suburbs weren't actually that nice in the first place TBH.
Where is nice? Hmmmmm, depends what you are looking for. I really wanted to move to Beckenham. We first lived in St Albans, which is nice, although it did experience some liquefaction. I would do a lot of asking when renting/buying about earthquake experiences in that area, and the level of disruption. Redwood, Papanui, Harewood, Avonhead didn't seem to suffer too much, as didn't Riccarton and further out.
Rolleston is about 30k out of town and didn't suffer too much in the Feb onwards quakes. Although it was affected by the Greendale fault (Sept quake). Not sure by how much. It is quite a new development and popular.
Spend a bit of time driving around and getting a feel for the place to see what you like.

DD is quite frightened by even the little aftershocks. We stay calm (or as calm as I can be without jumping out of my skin), give her a cuddle and carry on with what we were doing. We are feeling them stronger as they are happening nearer us this time.

I hope your move goes well, and that you settle in quickly. It can be a little nerve jangling but you get used to it, and hopefully the aftershocks will die down soon. I don't know what the experience is like in Riccarton, but it does seem to be further away from the seismic action :)

Hi Rillyrilly, thanks for advice! We got here Thursday & has been full on since then! Trying to get our bearings, but no car as of yet, so lots of walking. We've got a relocation agent as part of DH's new job, so she gave us a tour in her car on sat, round suburbs & down to summer, which all looked lovely - can't believe how green it all is, or how wide all the streets are! We're having a look round a house in papanui tomorrow, seem to get bit more for your money there & road looks nice, tho not sure what area as whole is like. Any advice? Haven't felt any aftershocks yet here in riccarton, tho DH says he felt one Fri night which I seem to have slept through, as did kids! Not looking forward to first one in the day though.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 08/01/2012 10:11

Glad you got here ok! Papanui is ok I think, make sure you join plunket which is an organisation for kids five years and under. They are part health visitor part NCT. They will tell you where the playgroups n stuff are in your area. Also look out for mainly music. It's quite hard to tap into what playgroups are in your area without plunket tbh. The libraries also do story time for preschoolers. You have moved in summer holidays so not much doing until beginning of feb for stuff like that.
The buses are good in Christchurch so getting a metro card is money well spent.
We found our relocation lady to a bit rubbish so I hope yours is better Smile
What did you think about your trip to sumner? Hope the containers didn't put you off. We have to there twice a week in term time.
Any other info you need let me know. It can get a bit hard moving countries when you aren't sure where to get info etc.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 29/01/2012 04:44

How are you doing juniper? Hope you are settling in ok.

teacakebiscuit · 30/01/2012 08:48

i have a friend in prebbleton who is very happy there. glad the trip over went well Smile

yawningmonster · 30/01/2012 09:03

Hi, Just seen this. I am in ChCh. We are out in Rolleston which is really lovely and very family friendly. My husband works near Riccarton and we used to live in Papanui near to Northlands. I loved living in Papanui and being close to the mall but I have found Rolleston much better in terms of actual family life. I have a 7 year old and a 2 year old btw. You could try and see if there is a playcentre near where you end up as that is a great way to get to know people and involve the kids in great activities at the smae time. Hi Rilly didn't know you were in CHCH not sure I have come accross your nn before. There used to be a couple of others at least one of whom was an expat but I haven't been in touch with them for a few years so not sure if they are still around.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 30/01/2012 11:32

Hi yawning, I think you started a lunchbox thread that I replied to Smile
We are in new brighton but our landlady is selling up so we have to move Sad I am a bit stressed about it.

yawningmonster · 30/01/2012 18:56

yes that was me. You poor things I don't blame you for being stressed the rental market is a little grim at the moment! Our prices out here are inflated beyond the point of ridicule just because people think they can ask nasty rents due to shortage after quake. I don't think it is going to last, sooner or later people are just going to say they can't afford the rent out here and go somewhere else. We were very lucky that when we came out it was still the back of nowhere and we got a cheap plot of land but the prices have tripled since we did that unfortunately. Was your rental affected much as Brighton was hard hit!

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 31/01/2012 00:06

How long have you been out here yawning?
We are in a patch of calm but round the corner was quite bad. Our landlady won't let us move early either and we found a place we could have moved to as well! So now I keep having to get the house mint for open homes. I hate housework as well Wink

yawningmonster · 31/01/2012 06:19

I am actually a kiwi born and bred. When I said came out I meant out to Rolly. I was raised in the North Island though. I came South to fail university, went back to North for a couple of years and then headed back again at 21 and have been here ever since (coming up to 19 years!!!) Oh open homes are grim, we are lucky to have ours clean and tidy for people to stay in every now and then let alone every weekend for people coming to look over. A shame they won't let you go early, they should have no problem selling if the house is essentially undamaged

yawningmonster · 04/02/2012 05:16

How is the house hunting going Rilly? Any news on op, are you settled in Juniper? Someone else on here mentioned Prebbleton which may be worth consideration, not quite as far out as us but less affected by the earthquakes than areas closer into city. Not sure what rental market is like there though.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 04/02/2012 07:59

Hey yawning thanks for asking! We can't look for something too soon as lease is up in April and l-lady doesn't want us to move out before then Sad we can't move too far from south Brighton as that's where DS goes to preschool and it wouldn't be worth moving him before he starts school. He is doing really well there.
DH wants to move nearer to the city centre and I am not sure.
Hope you're having a good long weekend Smile

yawningmonster · 04/02/2012 08:12

I think I am with you, don't think I would be keen closer to city centre. Puts you in a bit of an awful situation having to wait until April.
