Furniture in Singapore

TilGT · 03/09/2011 22:35

Hi all,
We're moving to Singapore next year from Geneva and I'm wondering if it's worth shipping all the furniture too.
Apart from ikea what are the best shops for contemporary (ish) furniture?
Also, are there a lot of mums netters in sing?!
Thx

There are a few MNers here yes!

Furniture- it all depends. I wouldn't bring very expensive old family pieces as the humidity won't do them much good. There are loads of furniture shops here, from Ikea at the cheap and cheerful end via lots of teak to expensive imported or handmade by craftsmen stuff at the top end. Most of the furniture for sale here is contemporary in style.

There are lot of leather sofas for sale- but we find leather doesn't do well in these climes and you are better off with cotton.

Park Mall opposite Plaza Singapura is a good start for furniture, The Furniture Mall on Beach Rd is worth a look and Dempsey Rd has some good shops (particularly worth a browse is John Erdos- he has some fab pieces).

Hi empire,
Thank you for the advice -I shall head over to Dempsey.
Sing mners ever meet up?!

Just wanted to add, there is a monthly "expat" auction where you can pick up a lot of asian cabinets, console tables, etc.../wood/garden furniture sets.
Some pieces are very good, they have photos of upcoming sale items if you want to have a look (expatauction.com.sg)

There is also a warehouse along Keppel road with some very well priced furniture and deco items. Its called Taylor B. She imports goods from the US and China by container every couple of months. Some amaing bargais. Once saw a solid wood dinner table for 12 + fully upholstered chairs going for under S$2000.

I would say the only item that is a rare commodity and really pricey is a good proper german/nordic flex bunk bed system.

February and june are good times to take advantage of the big sale and sweep some great designer pieces off the floor (literally) if you see something you like in the shops.

Agree with all above however we do have 2 leather sofas and they are fine, had them for a while and not a problem with the heat, this is with fan only and aircon on at night.

empirestateofmind · 06/09/2011 10:34

That's interesting Papooshka. My leather sofas were cheap ones- I guess you get what you pay for!

I just remembered ChinaCollection. They do nice old pieces of furniture and bits and pieces from China. There is a showroom on Malcolm Rd and a warehouse off Pasir Panhang. They have a website here.

There might be meetups, I don't know.

acatcalledbob · 06/09/2011 14:18

Saw this thread but you guys have just mentioned all the places I would have.

Our leather sofa (bought here, not cheap) is fine and I don't know anyone IRL who has experienced mould on a leather sofa....

acatcalledbob · 06/09/2011 14:22

Just thought of Shophouse www.theshophouse.com and http://www.originals.com.sg/ that sell contemporary styles in mostly old teak - pricey but will last a lifetime.

acatcalledbob · 06/09/2011 14:23

Ooops, links didn't work The Shophouse and Originals

Mummyinggnome · 06/09/2011 18:06

Thank you for all the advice and links - much appreciated!

Oops hope I'm not too late. You can check out Journey East at Outram (www.journeyeast.com) that sells recycled teak wood furniture for both indoor and outdoor settings - good prices!
