Linzer how did the dc cope with the long journey back? I'm dreading the trip to Bangladesh as we have to take the train to Frankfurt airport setting aoff at 5am and we get to Dhaka at 4am the next day. Then the going-east jetlag is the worst type too so we'll be like zombies for the the first few days! Coming back it'll be an early start too and then the train back to Hannover at 8pm. That's if we don't get delays - last time we sat on the tarmac in Oman for 7 hours due to fog!

Warm up week sounds good. Good for the parents atleast!

I went into the shop today to get Hefte for school line/square numbers 26, 25 and 27 all sold out! Hope they get some stocks in soon or the teachers will be complaining!

LinzerTorte · 22/08/2011 14:36

The DC coped surprisingly well with the long journey, but I was glad I had DH with me to help entertain them and, more importantly, to help carry all the luggage! I'd been even more worried about the journey over (I was on my own with the DC and our flight didn't land until midnight) but they were fine then too. Travelling with them is definitely getting easier; I remember when just the 2.5 hours on the plane was a nightmare with them (with DS, in particular). I don't envy you your journey though, admylin; at least we haven't had jet lag to cope with.

I'm already starting to miss UK temperatures as it's far too hot here - in the low thirties all this week (double what it was in Wales). DS was sweating when I picked him up from KiGa; we've just been to the playground, and even in the shade it was far too hot. We're going to a friend's lakeside house in about half an hour, so at least the DC will be able to cool off in the lake there. The only other place to go would be the Strandbad, but it's ridiculously busy when it's this hot.

admylin the casual and dismissive attitude of your dd's school sounds incredibly frustrating to say the least!

lannook I second the point that many toddlers groups close (rather annoyingly) in the school holidays. Most toddlers groups (around here anyway) are in the morning, with the deliberate idea that mum takes toddler while any older siblings are at KiGa or school... But you may find an afternoon one, less likely though. I'd still look for one to take your 2 year old to in the mornings as they are a good way to meet people - who you then might spend the odd afternoon with. When we arrived here my oldest was 19 months and I was pregnant with my second, so I had a year with both of them with me full time before my eldest started kindergarten, and I joined the local German toddlers group (despite next to no German - if you join a small group they are friendly I found, you will feel a bit lost at a big one without the language). I also eventually found an English speaking group, through which I met the only 2 English speakers I am in regular contact with now (stopped going to toddlers when my youngest turned 3 and started KiGa).

In the afternoons playgrounds are the best bet - talk to people, encourage your dds to play with other kids (sand pits are great for kids mixing - take disinfectant gel if your also going to give them snacks though due to the possibility of cat poo...). I also found out about the toddlers group I joined by asking mums in the local playground) Friebads (open air pools) are also great - they have toddler pools, and are perfectly manageable on your own with 2 toddlers - I've been every summer with my kids as they've grown and still go with 2 very active under 6s and a small baby. Maybe you'll hear another mum speaking English to her kids, in which case say hello (have also done this - you don't know if you don't try!). Also try Badsee (swimming lakes) to pass the time on a hot day - just pick your spot near other families for safety factor. On a cold/ wet day or to get out of the heat most libraries are quite child friendly, some even have story hours (does no harm to build up the German) and at 2 and 3 you can just tell a story from the pics if they have no English picture books. When mine were 1 and 3 we used to go to the local library every Tuesday afternoon (it's open limited hours).

Soft play places do exist here but are called fun parks - do a google search under funpark and your postcode, in my experience they are bigger and more expensive than average UK ones but also far more thin on the ground - avoid in school holidays but are a good occassional treat on a weekday afternoon in term time.

Hope to help!

Oh apart from that just have to say Henry has hit a really cool age now - rolling everywhere and giggling and laughing, I do love it when they start to do stuff other than cry, feed and poo! :) He'll be 4 months on Friday! Time is flying :(

Ah yes and the reason I actually logged on - DD wants a cinema party for her 6th birthday, to see the new Lilliefee film. Her birthday is on the Monday of the second week of term and we have sent invites out already, to get to the cinema at 3.15pm on a Monday (Monday is ?2 cheaper per ticket and also her actual birthday). One mum has said the kids won'*t be finished with their homework by 3pm! I suspect she wants me to re-schedule to the weekend for her own convenience tbh from other things she said, but is the 3.15pm start really going to be a problem, given school finished between 11.30am and 12.30pm (depending on the day). Advice from mums of school kids - first class homework won't take over 2.5 hours will it?

Canella · 22/08/2011 18:01

Just a quickie - what is the german word/phrase for skimming walls - we just want them lightly skimmed to make them smooth - said leicht verputzt but he looked at me like I had 3 heads!!! Thanks

tadjennyp · 23/08/2011 05:49

Wow, go camping for a few days to the coast and the Giant Redwoods and it takes ages to catch up with the thread! Hello lannook - I am just an honorary member of the thread as it has been a long time since I lived in Germany and I now live in America. I have dd who is 5 and about to start Kindergarten in 2 weeks, ds1 who is almost 4 and ds2 who is 6 months old and like 5mins' Henry is rolling all over the place and laughing like a drain. Good luck settling in and I hope you meet some people really soon. Kids are great at insinuating themselves into other families!

How frustrating about the school admylin. Can't help you with the skimming either canella, what you said seems understandable.

Glad you had a great time at home Linzer. It's the same temperature here and the play equipment at the park gets so hot it can burn skin. Still, I will be complaining in 2 months when it snows again!

Have a lovely relaxing week with your niece hupa.

LinzerTorte · 23/08/2011 06:38

Morning all,

Hope you had a good camping trip, Jenny.

Sorry Canella, I've no idea about skimming either (had never heard of it before) - I asked DH when I saw your post on FB last night but he didn't know what it was in either English or German either.

5more The DDs have been invited to plenty of birthday parties that started at 3pm during the week and I've never heard any parents complain before - it seems a perfectly reasonable time to me. Even when DD1 was really struggling and taking 1.5 hours to do her homework in the first year, we'd still have managed to fit in homework and lunch by 3 pm. (I should point out that most of the other children in her class only took about 20 mins to do their homework.) Surely they won't be getting that much homework in the second week of term anyway?

Must go as the neighbours' children are coming over at 8-8.30 (I'm looking after them this morning while their mother works) and I need to get myself and the DC up and dressed!

OP posts:
Canella · 23/08/2011 07:41

Think (with the help of a FB friend) that it might be feinputz. Glad your DH didnt know either - was beginning to wonder last night why my DH didnt know these things! I only know its called having walls skimmed in English cause we had an extension built on our house there. Otherwise I am beyond naive with building words in either language!

The kitchen is coming on tues next week so its a frenzy this week to get the room ready - feels like that changing rooms prog! The tiler and electrician were here at the same time yesterday - well mostly because the tiler drilled thro the elec cables leading to the living room Angry!!!!! But its all ok now - the room just needs a few more tile edges, grouting and the feinputz. Oh and some painting from DH this weekend!

linzer - hope the friends dc are good for you this morning. Hope the heat doesnt make them all crazy. Smile

5mins - cant believe henry is rolling already - time is going way too fast!

jenny - time going to fast at your end too!! Glad you had a good trip.

hupa - how's DS getting on this week at school? I cant imagine my DS getting stuck into school and homework etc - he has absolutely no interest in learning esp not reading which worries me since he's one of the oldest and they might expect more from him. We'll see......

Not moaning about the heat too much since it doesnt last for long but just dont like it when its hot in the night - hate that sticky feeling. But in the day its good - a good excuse to get the Wasserrutsche out!

admylin · 23/08/2011 08:19

Saw the weather forcast last night, you southerners are having it really hot aren't you? We've still got it quite cool and rain again today. I was telling dd if the hot weather comes up here I can se ethem getting the long wished for Hitzefrei!

Jenny, very brave camping with 3 dc! I was put off camping for life when I went with girl guides and a slug got in the tent!

Linzer, hope the neighbour's dc are behaving. Thank goodness you've got a garden, is the paddling pool out? It's always a shock to the system when you've spent a few weeks in British summer climate and then come back to the heat isn't it?

Canella, won't be long now with your kitchen! What's on the menu for the first time you use it?!!

5more, we were always finished with lunch and homework by 3pm and off to do afternoon activities. If there wa sany homework left over we sometimes did abit after 6pm before bed. How many are you taking to the cinema?

Canella · 23/08/2011 08:30

Dc are desperate for pizza admylin!! Easily pleased my lot. I'll just be having sekt, sekt and more sekt if it actually gets finished!

But i've refound my love for couscous in these few weeks with no proper kitchen - its just so easy to prepare and goes with everything. Had to hunt for it in Kaufland tho.

Hope the heat spreads your way admylin - altho think it'd have to be really hot for your dd to get her Hitzefrei.

LinzerTorte · 23/08/2011 08:41

I almost prefer cool and rainy to this heat, admylin. Why aren't temperatures ever in the nice-and-warm-but-not-too-hot mid-twenties? It's either one extreme or the other. Yes, we've got the paddling pool out but the DC are all playing in the cellar at the moment - probably the best place to be!

Not long to go until you get your new kitchen then, Canella - I bet you can't wait. I'm not up on English building terms at all and the only German one I can remember is Estrich. We're planning to put a bathroom in upstairs at some point (we had all the connections put in when the house was built) but goodness knows when we'll get round to it.

DH asked me last night whether I minded if he went off hiking with some work colleagues on Thursday and Friday; I thought it was some work-organised thing but no, apparently it's a private Veranstaltung and he'll be taking Friday off work. Well, rather him than me - I've never been able to work up much enthusiasm for Wanderungen, particularly organised ones. I'm so glad that I'm self-employed and don't have to worry about Betriebsausflüge any more; I was dreading the canoeing one for weeks beforehand.

OP posts:
admylin · 23/08/2011 09:10

Canella, I love cous cous too. Whenever I see it in Netto or Lidl (on specials) I buy loads to keep me going, abit like the baked beans stock-up that we also do! Dunno if you've ever tried them but Lidl do a make your own pizza kit that my 2 like to do. The base is rolled out already, little jar of tomato sauce and then they put their choice on top.

Linzer, same here, there are only a few day sa year when I can say that's my perfect weather! Wanderung is a typical German hobby isn't it? I grew up in the Lake District so I suppose wandering around fields and over fells and mountains is boring because that's all we had to do as dc and teens and we dreamt of being in a city!

5moreminutes · 23/08/2011 12:42

Thanks Linzer and admylin that's what I thought and wanted to hear! The mum making problems is our next door neighbor, and DD didn't even really want to invite her but in the end I said she should as dd went to her party. Neighbour came around to tell me her dd would be doing full day school 3 days a week incl a Mon so wouldn't be able to come, and said that I wouldn't be allowed to pick her dd up (which I offered to do) because if you sign up for full day school you have to stick to it... I am not sure about that as anyway the school does not offer real full days, it is just a Carritas run Hort thing, but I haven't looked into it myself. She then suggested weekend would be better and came up with the homework reason - and went on to say her dd had speach therapy and dance on her other 2 free week day afternoons... I think she just wants me to switch it to a weekend so her dd can come, as she seems to go to comparatively few birthday parties... We have invited 10 little girls - dd is inviting the little boy whos party she is going to on Thursday to tea instead, as she decided he would not appreciate a Lillifee film!

It is so hot here, doesn't suit baby H really - he has been in the paddling pool this morning though :) Got to go and take dd to a friend's for a mini water slide party!

Hope the neighbour kids behaved Linzer
Good luck with the kitchen Canella
Glad you had a good trip Jenny, aren't rolling babies cool? :)

lannook · 23/08/2011 15:15

I am finding the heat unbearable - feel like I am in Egypt! I am starting to think about skiing holidays next Feb - maybe Austria? The children are very small (will be 4 and almost 3 then) but we want to try - any suggestions for places would be really appreciated.

LinzerTorte · 23/08/2011 15:38

lannook Too hot here as well - our neighbour's thermometer was measuring 42° in the sun! Re skiing holidays, it would be a good idea to start looking now as places get booked up very quickly during the Semesterferien (generally staggered over the first three weeks in February - have just checked and they're from 6th-25th Feb in 2012). We've only ever taken the DC skiing for the day and usually go to Semmering as it's only about an hour's drive from us but I'm not sure I would recommend it as a holiday destination. Kärnten is quite a popular skiing area; friends of ours go to Falkertsee and Bad Kleinkirchheim (have only ever been to Bad Kleinkirchheim in the summer, but the area is lovely). I think Canella went skiing in Austria earlier this year, so she might have some recommendations for you. All I can say is book early - it's not unusual to book your skiing holiday during the previous summer holidays.

5more Is that the neighbour who was taking you for granted when you were pregnant? If so, I definitely wouldn't change the party just to suit her! It sounds as if the Hort is quite inflexible if you have to send the children there if they're registered; with our Hort, it's no problem to pick the DC up early or even not to send them as long as you let the Hort know.

admylin Yes, I have memories of being forced to go on long walks with my family on our summer holidays and now my heart sinks any time someone suggests going for a walk! (Although once we've got out, it's usually OK.)

The morning went very quickly in the end; it was definitely easier having six rather than three children, although only because three weren't my own and it stopped my three from squabbling quite as much as they usually do. My neighbour invited me over for coffee after lunch and the DC have all been over there ever since, so I've had a nice quiet afternoon. The only problem is that our neighbours are going to the Strandbad in about half an hour and DD2 is insisting on going as well (which means the other two will want to go). I'm not sure I can face going - too hot, too many people and too expensive (our neighbours have a season ticket) - but DH has said he'll be home around 5.30 pm so maybe he can take the DC!

OP posts:
Canella · 23/08/2011 18:00

Been very hot here too!!! But not 42 degrees - wow! Think thats a reason to stay indoors in the cellar!

I didnt go to Austria skiing in the end - we left it too late to book and the availability wasnt great. So we went to Thüringer Wald instead - only an hour from us, there was more snow than I'd seen in my life and there was enough downhill for the dc to learn and endless cross country tracks which the dc also enjoyed. We're hopefully going back in January - have started to look for a Ferienwohnung already since our accomodation last year was very East German!

LaterAlligator · 24/08/2011 08:12

Hope you had a nice time with your niece, Hupa!

Admylin Sorry to hear the school are being a pain. Would it be worth just turning up at the school one day and asking the secretary for 10 mins with the head? It will be a little harder for them to fob you off that way, and you can take the letter (if you have one) from the Jugendamt saying that the school need to be doing more. I do think the school's attitude sounds awful!
When is the big trip to Bangladesh?

Lanook Sorry I can't help with the toddler activity issue - I'm currently pregnant with my first so I'm afraid it's not something I have any experience in. It sounds like the others have offered some good advice though, so I hope things work out.

Linzer It sounds like you had a nice morning with the children. Did your DH take them to the Strandbad in the end or did you get roped into it?

5more Your neighbour sounds very cheeky! I wouldn't rearrange just to suit her if everyone else is happy with the plans.

Canella Ooh are you on kitchen countdown now? I bet you can't wait! Our downstairs neighbours have just had their whole flat renovated and I'm becoming increasingly jealous with all the lovely shiny new floor tiles, kitchen appliances and furniture coming up and down the stairs.

Hello to anyone I've missed!

The heat has been unbearable here over the past few days too, but we had a storm in the night and are due more over the next few days so hopefully that should cool things down a little.
I had a Dr's appointment yesterday and she thinks the baby will arrive a few weeks early as his head is so far down already - so chances are he will be here in 4 weeks instead of 2! The excitement is really kicking in now - I panic bought nappies on the way home :)

LaterAlligator · 24/08/2011 08:13

That made no sense - he may be here in 4 weeks instead of 6!

Canella · 24/08/2011 08:39

Oh I always wished when I was pregnant that the baby would come a bit early so i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Its my DS2's 5th birthday today!!!! Feels crazy that my youngest is now 5 but glad he's not a toddler anymore - he really tested every parenting skill I had! So he's decided he's staying home from kiga today - he says its his birthday and he can do what he wants!!! Hmmmm!!! So he's watching cbeebies but he'll have to switch it off soon to go and get some shopping. I get the terrible mother award - i didnt have enough batteries for his new remote control car. Blush

LinzerTorte · 24/08/2011 09:33

Happy birthday to your DS, Canella! DS turned 5 last month - in fact, he's exactly one month than your DS (same birthday as you IIRC). It's quite a strange feeling when your youngest is 5, isn't it? I think it will feel even stranger when they're all at school.

Later Not long to go now, then - being pregnant in this heat isn't much fun (I had two July babies) and I'm sure you can't wait to meet him. Very exciting that he may be here even earlier than expected. Grin

We all ended up going to the Strandbad in the end - it wasn't actually too bad and, although it was still busy, I only bumped into three people I knew. It was so hot that I was almost tempted to go into the water myself (I did go into the Thermalbecken, but that's about 34° so warm enough even for me!), but I sat on the edge with my legs in the water most of the time and watched the DC.

Now off to brave the stationery shop. Am not sure I really want to go out in this heat, but if we want to go without DS (much easier) we really need to go either today or tomorrow morning, when it's forecast to be just as hot. We should really have been more organised and gone as soon as I'd dropped DS off at KiGa, but it seems to have taken ages for everyone to get up and dressed and for me to wash, dry and straighten my hair. (Am trying out a new product that claims to keep your hair straight for three days. I'm slightly sceptical.) Now waiting for the DDs to finish their game of Ludo - why do they only ever get on so well when we have to go out?

OP posts:
Canella · 24/08/2011 10:26

So true Linzer - mine are exactly the same when we want to go out. Hope you got all your stuff at the shop.

I had remembered that your DS and I shared a birthday (and Jennifer Lopez too!) but wasnt sure how old he was. So he'll go to school next year too? I agree that will be strange when they're all at school (but good strange!!).

Just waiting for my new fridge to arrive! They said between 9 & 12, then phoned to say 1.30 and have now phoned again to say in 15 mins!!!!! Make up your minds!

LaterAlligator · 24/08/2011 10:36

Aww Happy Birthday to your DS, Canella! I'm sure I remember 5 being a really fun age :)

Good luck with the stationery shopping, Linzer. I can't say I envy you the task.

Unfortunately the storm doesn't seem to have cooled things down much at all, so I'm sprawled across the sofa with lots of cold water and a fan - it's not that much fun being huge in this heat! The Dr is a little worried I might have a liver infection so I'm making the most of the enforced rest until my blood test results come back at the end of the week and am catching up with a load of TV on the laptop. This is, indeed, the life :)

5moreminutes · 24/08/2011 12:20

Lanook we have taken the kids skiing for the last couple of years to Nauders - the ski school there does lessons for 3 year olds up, and my eldest, who is nearly 6, skiis quite well now - she had a try at 3, just a 2 hour lesson, but really took to it at 4 and did 4 morning lessons, then at 5 she loved it and did 5 full days and they were using the lifts etc. They also have a "ski kindergarten" where the kids can have a go at skiing but if they get tired or don't like it can play on playground equipment or go inside, supervised by Kindergarten trained staff.

I am melting today, we went to the Friebad but it was crowded even at 9.30am when we got there, was OK but dd was stung by a wasp as we got ready to come home :(

5moreminutes · 24/08/2011 12:27

*canella happy birthday to your ds! Mine love going to kiga on their birthdays as they do parties instead of circle time, with a throne etc!

Canella · 24/08/2011 12:37

Yeah they do that at Ds's kindergarten but he hates all the attention so didnt want to have it. He's going back tom but the kiga staff have obviously said he doesnt have to celebrate if he doesnt want to.

Boiling here too - wish I'd gone to the Freibad! Maybe tomorrow!

LinzerTorte · 24/08/2011 15:09

Hope your fridge arrived in the end, Canella. A walk-in fridge would be a good thing to have in this weather - although actually it's not too bad in the cellar, where DD1 and her friend are playing at the moment (the other two are at friends').

Later Hope you're making the most of your enforced rest and that it turns out you don't have a liver infection. Fans can be lifesavers in this hot weather - I don't know why I haven't thought of getting ours out yet, esp. when the DC complain it's so hot in their bedrooms that they can't sleep (although keeping the shutters closed all day definitely helps).

5more Hope your DD is OK now.

We ran out of time to go to the stationery store in the end - and it was too hot to go out anyway, so we'll go first thing tomorrow instead. Also need to get an extra birthday present for a party that the DC are going to tomorrow afternoon - all three of them have been invited, so I'm looking forward to a few hours of peace and quiet. Grin After 7.5 weeks, I'm counting the days until they go back to school!
