Just heard from them! They are all fine, don't know details yet as they aren't at home, very brief text, but they are alive and unhurt. Thank you to everyone.

Hi - thanks for the messages of support. It's been a surreal and dreadful few days. I was working at Christchurch Hospital when it happened, terrifying. The hospital came through relatively well though.

The central city is decimated in places, some of the suburbs are not so bad. But others are completely flooded, with no power and water supply and no hope of either for some time.

My husband and I are lucky to be able to stay with relatives just outside of Christchurch where there are all the usual services available.

It's very hard to believe what has happened still and as it is a small city, everyone will likely know someone who has been killed or severely injured.

We are all hoping that more live rescues will occur but there hasn't been one now for almost 48 hours. It is only bodies being recovered.

Sorry for the ramble, and thanks again. I'm glad for those of you above who have received word of friends and rellies who are ok.
My internet connection is a bit patchy so forgive me if I post and run.

PonceyMcPonce, Sumner has suffered some rock falls from the cliffs above. I know that one of the buldings, the RSA was very badly affected with a fatality there from a falling boulder.
As a whole the subburb was cut off, but the main bridge access opened again last nigth apparently.

We are round the corner from Parklands. We have now got electricity and have had water for a day.

I am glad you got hold of your family Balia. I hope other ChCh residents are ok.

I had got back from Sumner about 15 mins before the earthquake. Once again, in a different rented house, we have suffered no damage. OH was in the car, near the centre. He got home in two hours and we have been together ever since. We are so so so so lucky.

Good news about your family Balia. The patchy communications make it so hard.

Turns out my aunt, who has been in a strop with the whole family for over a year, still hasn't been heard from. My poor Mum is frantic. She may just have not bothered to contact anyone or she could be lying dead somewhere.

Good to hear some positive news from those of you back in Chch.

Things in Parklands are varied. At my brothers house they are fine and are just waiting for the water to come on. There is no liquefaction at all. Around the corner about 500 meters there are poles down, exposed pipes, the road is ripped up and there is 3 feet of liquefaction. I hope your family are on a 'lucky' street Balia.

Family are 'camping out' at my Bil's work - their house isn't inhabitable and they aren't sure what is going to happen next but they had about 2 hours of electricity on thursday (thus the message) and they have water. Whatever street they are on I'm feeling pretty lucky right now.

I know how you feel. My brother and neice drove through the centre of town 25 mn before the quake. They went right down the streets which were covered in debris. Sends shivers down my spine.

I haven't been on here for ages - probably over a year - but just caught up with all the mumsnetters mentioning Parklands and wanted to say hi - because I live in Parklands too.

Hi thirtyfive pence. I hope things are getting back to normal for you in Parklands. My brother tells me there are still some big aftershocks happening. I can't imagine what that does to your nerves!

Hi thirtyfivepence, as you can see, I am round the corner!

I hope that you are ok after the quake. The aftershocks are doing my head in, much worse than in September...
