Living in Chicago?

Hi everyone,

Looking more and more likely that we'll end up in Chicago before the end of the summer - eek!

Any mumsnetters out there?

Also if anyone could recommend any other websites I could have a look at, I'd really appreciate it - everything I've found on Google seems pretty out of date.

DH will be working in the city but we're looking at living in Evanston.

Scared out of my wits - could do with some hand-holding!

why are you scared? I don't know Chicago but dh goes there on business a lot and from what he says although he is not enamoured of down-town Chicago, the outskirts are very nice and then there are the great lakes. When he is there, the locals take him out and about and he has been quite impressed with it.

I'm scared because I've never lived anywhere apart from England before!

I'm going to miss my friends and family terribly, and although I know it's the best thing to do money-wise and for DH's career, I feel like I've only just settled into a great life here since DS was born 2 years ago, and now we're going to have to start from scratch again.

The thought of finding my way round, finding friends, driving, looking for playgroups for DS etc etc is making my stomach turn every time I think about it.

Trying to be excited though.....and as you said I've heard nothing but nice things about Chicago itself.

Sure it'll be fine once I get there :o

I can tell you everything there is to know about Chicago. I lived there for 22 years of my life until I packed everything up and moved to England just as you will be moving to Chicago. (ps im 24 now so wasnt all too long ago and not much has changed )

Only things I might not be able to assist you with is playgroups. I didnt have children at the time so that might have to be something you will need to ask around about for everwhere you decide to settle.

Feel free to PM me if you would like to chat about it and I can do my best to answer your questions. You must have millions of them :D

Ooh thanks Talia, that would be great - will send you a message tomorrow when DS is at his grandparents.

How are you finding England in comparison?
