I want to live abroad again - but would my DH get a job?

I'm a teacher and worked in Mexico for 3 years at a British International School. My DH (well boyfriend at the time) came and joined me and managed to get work with North west and Severn trent Water who both had projects in Mexico City. He then got a job in Malaysia and I followed him and managed to get a locally paid job at an interntional school.

I'm now desperate to live abroad again and would love my children to do so for a couple of years. So, I would easily be able to get a job in an International school, and hopefully one that would let my children attend free, or very highly subsidised. But a teachers salary would not really cover the costs of supporting a family. And my husband would hate not working. What do you think the chances of him getting a job locally are? Ideally I'd be looking at central / South America, or possibly SE Asia.

I can speak as the trailing wife of a teacher. We've lived in Oman, Thailand, Switzerland and now Belgium.
When we were in Thailand I did a TESOL course that enabled me to teach ESL. I did manage to find work in Bangkok but have failed in the next two countries.
I should imagine that if he did a CELTA while you are still in the UK, he would be able to find some teaching work.

Hmmmmm - now that's where part of the problem lies - he really doesn't want to teach!

So, kreecher does your DHs salary cover the living costs for all of you? And have you ever had to pay anything towards school fees?

Yes and no, in that order. TBH, we do struggle sometimes, particularly since we moved to Europe. It seems to be custom and practice for your rent and health care to be paid for in ME and Thailand, but not in Europe.
I have just had an email from a friend in the 'kok. the Baht to pound rate is the lowest it has been for years and years so the cost of living has increased by about 30%. OTOH, everything is so cheap it hardly matters.
Never had to pay anything towards DD school fees, although DH turned down a job in either Bahamas or Bermuda because they wanted half the fees.
Hope this helps.

what line of work is your dh in? Hard to say if he would get a job locally without knowing what he can/does do and what his language skills are IYSWIM

Just had another thought. Depending on the country you apply to, you may not be able to be the sponsor of your husband.
I know that when we lived in Oman, a woman couldn't be the visa holdy thing, so my friend couldn't sponsor her DH, he had to be the one with the job and she had to trail along until she got one. It won't apply to you, but you had to be married too Shock

Re SE Asia, can only talk about what I know but HK is really hard if you cant speak Mandarin/ Cantonese and are not being "brought over" by an International company or have some really exceptionally rare skill set (or are an English native school teacher:-).

If you are a professional you can sometimes get away without Cantonese but if you are in any normal level job, (PA, clerical, shop, mechanic etc) it's required, so basically I'm qualified to work in an investment bank but not in McDonalds.

I am a chartered accountant and really struggled because all the locals speak fluent English plus Chinese so it's very hard to persuade an employer that they should hire you above them, esp when you're a trailing spouse so they know you prob wont stay more than a few years

Teaching English in HK is a possibility but it's really badly paid and there are loads of cowboy operators.
