We've moved to the land that never wakes

Yes, when we moved to france we wanted to have a more relaxed lifestyle. Problem is though that things are a little too relaxed. Strike after strike is causing endless disruptions in our lives. I am an auto-entrepeneur and so only get paid if I work, however when all the school teachers go on strike (which is currently about once a week), I have to cancel lessons (english teaching), if it's not the teachers then it's the people I'm teaching....we have expensive electric, telephone and building material bills, how are we supposed to be pay them if we keep having to cancel days at work! Another thing, I contacted CAF for child benefit and they keep saying that the application is being processed, but NOTHINI G HAPPENS, they've conveniently not given me any contact details, so we're sat here waiting for a response, even if it is "send us another bit of paper" at least we would know that the claim was being delat with. The English auths stopped our Child benefit over a year ago and we haven't had a penny since. We've always worked, we are European citizens, so why do I feel like another unwelcome gypsy? Any advice gladly welcomed. p.s. could you imagine the teachers going on strike in England, the parents would be in uproar- here they just take it on the chin.

I suspect that lots of people who are striking basically agree that we'll all have to work longer.

A lot of it is just anger at the government. If they weren't seen as a bunch of cynical crooks helping their mates and desperately dismantling public services as fast as they can, if Sarkozy hadn't been hanging on to Eric Woerth for grim death because if he had given in to (legitimate) pressure to disown a clearly corrupt minister then Woerth, as party treasurer, would have dished loads of lethally damaging dirt on the UMP, and if the whole way the reform is being voted through didn't smack of haste and disrepect, then many of the people who are striking wouldn't have striked.

Re the schools, many of the people striking last year were doing so against slashes to teaching posts. this is indicative of what many people were a little concerned about.

Yes, it's a total pain in the arse. I don't think things are too relaxed; I think apathy hasn't struck yet.

Thanks to you all for your advice, nice to feel not so alone, means a lot. Smile I decided not to go to work because the school garderie is also out of service, so hubby would have had to leave work early too - decided that it was more hassle than it was worth, so am gonna settle down to "loose women" with a cup of tea and bugger it all. On the Child benefit front, I got a reply asking for a letter from england yesterday, which I sent toute de suite this morning....if I get back pay I will be eternally happy, we haven't had any money since january, so fingers crossed - can you imagine if it arrived before xmas, that would be amazing! pinch myself - don't be ridiculous, life's just not like that!!! Anyway, I can't help feeling guilty when I cancel lessons.....how stupid am I? it's not even my fault. Sorry to hear about Ggirl's friend - in terms of length of stirke - that is anyone's guess I'm afraid....you'll just have to keep checking. We've got friends visiting next week - the fuel shortages may also put a stop to this (reminds me, I must ring her).....So, onwards and upwards to the tele, at least the strikes are good for something - although my bottom seems to be increasing in size due to the much over-indulgence in chocolate and crisps!!!
