I am sooooo excited! I haven't posted on here for a while, I was Back off Margery but name changed. Anyhoo...
We moved to Christchurch from the UK four months ago. Stuff arrived one and a half months ago.
After four months of living in furnished accommodation we have finally got a house to rent and can get our stuff back! I missed my stuff sooo much. Its ridiculous isn't it?

Let's hope nothing broke in the earthquake!

Will it be easier to settle in with our own tat stuff around us?

I know the feeling.
We arrived in NZ in January. We lived with 5 plastic garden chairs and a table, mattresses and new TV/fridge/microwave until April when all our things arrived. It was like Christmas, we were all so excited.
In fact I still get a thrill when I look round and see everything.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 27/09/2010 08:04

It is exciting. When we moved from Bangkok to Switzerland, our stuff which should have taken six weeks door to door to 14 or so. this was because the twatting shippers hadn't produced an invoice for us to pay. when it arrived it was like christmas and all our birthdays.
Enjoy your stuff, it is great.

savoycabbage · 27/09/2010 08:07

It's not ridiculous at all! My children were so excited to have all of their toys back and I almost wept over my potato masher....

ScroobiousPip · 27/09/2010 08:19

Oooh, it is literally like having 100 christmasses at once, isn't it!! There's nothing like camping with garden chairs and a set of cheap crockery from the Warehouse to make you appreciate your possessions!

We moved to NZ in May and our things arrived 2 weeks ago. I've been having the best time, every night, unpacking all our possessions and books. DS has been in toy heaven! The one thing that made me particularly happy was finding my special bottle stopper for sparkling wine. It finally does feel like home. Grin

Fingers crossed, Rillyrilly, that your stuff all survived the earthquake. Good luck with unpacking.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 27/09/2010 08:54

Our stuff took slightly longer than it should have because they unloaded it in Sydney and then sent it on its way two weeks later. Nice. Luckily everything has passed the customs check and nothing had to be cleaned, not even OH's motorbike!

I will most look forward to seeing my big le creuset saucepan, my stick blender and my quilting stuff. Woo hoo!

We were lucky to be living in a furnished house where the landlord provided a cot for DD and a highchair, and it had a relatively well equipped kitchen. So it wasn't all bad...

Gosh, this has brought it all back; the massive container outside the house, and brown cardboard strewn everywhere.

For some reason, not one single standard lamp survived the move.

Kekke · 28/09/2010 00:09

I totally know where you are coming from! We have just had 3 months living with the stuff we could carry with us on leave, one month of which was living in a hotel with a 5 month old. Everything arrived last Thursday, after a journey from Romania to Panama via Malta, Morocco, Dominican Republic and Venezuela!

Happy unpacking!

differentnameforthis · 28/09/2010 01:02

I was in heaven the first in my won bed after 12 weeks! It was divine!

dd thought it was Christmas as she opened all her boxes of toys!

Not silly at all, enjoy!

Weta · 29/09/2010 08:20

That's so exciting! I remember when our stuff arrived in France from Chch, and it really does make it easier to settle in as you feel like yourself again somehow...

shelscrape · 29/09/2010 22:19

Oh crumbs, I've got all this to go thorugh yet. Moving to Whagarei on the NOrth Island in Janaury ... both removal firms we've spoken to said our stuff would take a maximum of 6 weeks. Please tell me it doesn't months! DS (and DH) will not cope without the train set for so long

shelscrape · 29/09/2010 22:19

What a div, can't even spell where I'm moving to yet .... Whangarei

ScroobiousPip · 30/09/2010 08:02

Hi Shelscrape, if you want your stuff quickly, my tip would be to opt for your own container which takes about 6 weeks. We opted for the slightly cheaper shared container option and then found that the container sat in the UK for 6 weeks, waiting to be filled up. I had been reassured endlessly that they had other people to fill it up so was Angry about the delay.

Good luck with the move!

charmander · 30/09/2010 10:33

Hello Shelscrape. I was in Whangarei today. I live about 50 minutes south of it.Let me know if there is anything I can do.

You can spell it but can you say it?
My dc were discussing this as we drove through Waipu. which is obviously the funniest place name ever if you are a 4/10/12 year old boy!

We went with Anglo Pacific for moving, it did take some time, but we did it all just before Christmas which did not help.

Good Luck.

P.S. take the train set with you! I ended up taking a toddler's metal trike on the plane! Check your luggage allowance - we could have double because we were emigrating.

Wordsonascreen · 30/09/2010 12:33

Charmander is Anglo Pacific : ALS movers ?
They're currently shipping our stuff (to UAE)

charmander · 30/09/2010 20:41

I don't think so, although that may be their local name e.g. in NZ their counterpart in New Zealand Van Lines.

shelscrape · 30/09/2010 22:40

oooh ta Charmander. Need to book flights first i think, DH will be teaching in whangarei, while I spend about another 4 months sitting the last of my NZ bar exams. I need to get my head around the pronunciation rules for Maori names to be sure! DS's main concern was whether to could take his train set and if they speak english in NZ, once we told him his birthday was in the summer he was sold on it!

We've had a quote from anglo pacific, they were the most helpful firm and we will definitely be getting our own container, far too much stuff to share!

ScroobiousPip · 01/10/2010 09:17

Shelscrape, good luck with the move and exams- you're very organised to have started sitting them already! I'm sitting them all in February (6 in 2 days - Sad). Will be such a relief to get them out of the way.

charmander · 01/10/2010 10:36

I am teaching Primary at Paparoa and my husband is a secondary teacher here in Maungaturoto.

Wh is said F unless you live up the road from me on Whaka St, where for some reason the residents seem to just drop the h and call it Waka St. Wink

Is one of you a kiwi? We will have been here a year on 1st Jan, so far we are all very happy.
My birthday has gone from the longest day of the year to the shortest, still at least I know to expect rain.

Good luck with the exams.

shelscrape · 01/10/2010 23:04

Scroobious - lots of luck with the NZLPE. I've done 2 so far, the most I could manage with working at the mo. Crime was utterly vile and I had convinced myself i had failed, but luckily passed both. Now need to get bum into gear and study for the other 4.
