not sure where to post this, i have given my dss my mobile phone (on an orange contract) after the summer, he will be going back to his mum in france but wants to take phone with him so he can stay in touch with us. should i buy a pay as you go french sim card or just set it up for roaming? he mainly wants to use it for txting and ringing us and the occasional txt to his cousin in france.

I'm not sure whether things have changed now, but when we were in France (a year or so ago) the pay as you go cards weren't very good, as they expire very quickly (as in, after a week or a month, depending how much credit you pay for) and actually work out a lot more expensive than a contract. So it's probably worth checking that out.

Agree with Weta - had to change my pay as you go to a contract for precisely that reason. There are a few pretty cheap contracts out there especially for youngsters (i.e. 18-25) so one of those might fit the bill for you.

I have a pay as you go sim from Leclerc where the credit stays valid for a year but you have to pay ?3.50 a month service charge. It's worked out well for me as I don't use my mobile that much and a contract wouldn't have been worth it.

as i will be paying the orange contract £25 per month anyway, would it be worth letting him carry on with that in france, on roaming plan , or will i end up with massive bill?

Quick thread hijack.

Scouserabroad - I've got one of those leclerc contracts but the monthly fee is ?1.50. Has the fee gone up recently?
