Applying for new jobs in UK

So, we move back to the UK on Monday and we need to quite quickly look at getting jobs.

How do you explain your absence and then coming back when it just hasn't worked out? Are you just honest or do you say something like family circumstances? What's best?

Next, before we moved to Australia my husband had about 6 weeks off work due to being ill. This is now under control with medication but we are concerned that if any future employer in the UK asks about sick leave in any reference they apply for. Should he wait and explain if it arises or should he say at interview stage if he feels or get the feedback that things are going well? I'd hate for him to be turned down for a position if this comes back in a reference and he doesn't get the chance to explain.

Thanks.

Can you provide a bit more info?

  • How long were you in Australia?
  • Did your OH work in Australia or are you coming back because he couldnt find work?

Sorry to be nosey- just trying to ascertain how big a CV gap he needs to explain.

How long were you away?

No-one ever asked why I had moved back. Can't you just say you were there for a specific amount of time and moved back when the time was up?

Some employers ask for number of sick days in the past 2 years or similar - be honest and if they question it, explain.

In Australia for 18 months. Both worked here. Government changes meant our visa class is no longer sustainable so we have to come back.

So huge gaps in employment with the exception of the first few months when we arrived. Much the same as most people of emigrate I suppose.

In that case I'd just be honest and say that immigration changes mean that Australia is no longer an attractive location relative to the UK.

Re the sick leave, if they ask, be honest and open about it, including any additional support/ flexibility that your husband still needs (eg if he needs time off for hospital appointments). Whether you want to pre-empt it is another matter. Personally, I probably would, because every employer I've known has wanted this information from previous employer (I can see why given sick pay laws in the UK)and if he brings it up it makes it look as though he really feels it's a past issue.

References are usually only checked once a job offer has been received, so then would be a good time to broach it, if he decides to.

Yes, be honest about your time away and reasons for coming back.

And about sick leave, if asked.

Good luck
