I am not English, I have returned to Ireland after more than a decade in the UK, so now for the course I want to do, I need to get garda clearance and CRB!

I feel like jacking it all in and just drinking tea for the next 20 years. I hate all this administrative hassle!

I used to live in Surrey, and somebody from the main switchboard told me to look on the www.surrey.police.uk site and download a crb form (for £10). I can't find this.

After the course introduction, everybody was in the toilets totally stressing about their unpaid TV licence from 1996 etc... I know they have to do this,,, but arghgh, and for me double argh.

I've found this link

www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/apply/ is this of any use? when I worked in the leisure industry, we used to use disclosure scotland for crb for personal licences

jamaisjedors · 28/07/2010 12:44

I needed this for French nationality, I had to write to the police station where I last lived in the UK and ask for a letter certifying I had no criminal record.

Thanks iklboo, and others...... I don't think a letter is enough these days? I think a part of the garda clearance process is to have complete clearance from the UK too, so I'm thinking a letter wouldn't cut it these days! if they'd even write you a letter.

I will check out that link now iklboo, tvm

I had to get a disclosure from my local police force once, I can't even remember why now. I think tat the situation is that you can't apply for a CRB for yourself, but you can apply for a 'subject access'. Something to do with the Freedom of Information Act or similar... So schools or whatever can apply for a CRB but not just anyone can.

I will try and find out what I did.

But you have to be able to get some kind of CRB check done for yourself , a friend who is self-employed (leads drama workshops in schools) has done it. Some of his work gets booked thru an agency (employer) but plenty doesn't, and he needs a CRB either way.

ViveLaFrak · 29/07/2010 05:46

No ragged, you use a checking agency like civil and corporate to do it in that case. Or 1 place does it and the others accept that one.

You will probably have to return to the UK to fill the firms in though as they will need to verify your identity. It can be done at some Post Offices so it doesn't have to be in front of a person from the registered body but not, as far as I know, from abroad.

There's a page on the CRB site about what to do if you don't live in the UK.

fizzytree · 29/07/2010 21:45

You need to look at the association of chief police officers in the Uk and they do the crb check and it is accepted worldwide.

sunnydelight · 30/07/2010 01:27

Do a search on www.britishexpats.com. Lots of people there have had to do this and it is possible - you certainly don't have to appear in person.

Where have you gone back to? (just being nosy, I'm originalloy from Dublin).

ViveLaFrak · 30/07/2010 08:21

The ACRO check isn't accepted worldwide actually - some places insist on a Criminal Record Bureau check printed on pretty green paper despite the fact ACRO is checking the same database

The only times I've heard (or rather found via google) of people not having to return to the UK to do the identity verification is where there's been a reciprocal agreement in place and someone local has been able to countersign.

Oh sorry ViveLaFrak, my mistake! You might want to call it ACPO though before you correct people

ViveLaFrak · 01/08/2010 14:35

Actually it's my iPhone making auto corrections! I'm yet to work out how to turn the bloody thing off

It also insists on capitalising the r in Reading for sone reason despite the fact I talk about literacy more than parts of Berkshire!

ViveLaFrak · 01/08/2010 14:37

On second thoughts maybe the auto-correct is a good thing as I clearly can't type anyway...

fizzytree · 01/08/2010 19:24

My I phone really bugs me too. Especially if I try and rush a message.
