we're thinking of moving to Nairobi, but we're completely clueless as to go about... anything really.

Any -and I mean ANY- thoughts or advice much appreciated

Yes I'm living there permanently. Happy to offer advice. What do you want to know?

gobsmackedetal · 20/07/2010 06:57

hi, thank you.

First of all, what does accomodation more or less cost, we're negotiating salaries atm and we'd like to be able to afford something comfortable. Our kids are still too young for us to worry about school, as we're going for an experimental year, but if we were to stay what international schools are there?

I went on line to look for places to rent, but I'm totally clueless as to the areas to pick. I assume, like every other city, it has safer areas and areas to be avoided, which ones should I definitely avoid.

Someone told me that Nairobi is a very dangerous city with very high crime and one shouldn't be found walking around alone, surely that's not right?!?

what about the cost of children's clothes and nappies? How to recruit a nanny or find a nursery?

Anything else you can think of that you needed to know when you moved there I'll be happy to know. I'm sorry if I sound like a complete idiot and for bombardin you with all these questions, btu I didn't do my research in time and I'm now panicking a bit

The areas you choose to live will depend on where you will be working. The traffic during rush hours is truly dreadful so most people try to live close-ish to their work place.

The rent will depend therefore on the area you choose to live and what kind of accommodation you want. If you want a huge house and garden it'll be more than a furnished appartment for example. Look here for some examples of both.

Nairobi is much like any other African city in that there are pockets and areas of crime, mostly carjacking, that occur on and off through the year. It is fine to walk around downtown Nairobi during the day and to some extent at night too. It is a question of not taking silly risks and being aware of the dangers around you. We all have guards at our houses and security panic buttons to press in case of any kind of incident.

Disposable nappies are all available, we have huge supermarkets with most things. Sometimes there may not be nappies in the size/brand you expect but they are generally always there.

There are no nurseries, everyone has an ayah (nanny) and there are often 'playgroups' where the nanny goes with the babies. A nanny is very easy to find and I can help you with that one.

If you don't want to give away too many details online, feel free to CAT me by clicking on contact poster then you can divulge all your details in private.

oh, thank you so much, the link was usefull, though disheartening, accomodation looks much more expensive than I expected. Gonna do my research tonight/tomorrow night and CAT you with more specific questions. I really appreciate you taking time to help me
