Does this sound like prostate/ bladder cancer? Help!

DP's symptoms sound like those associated with prostate metastatic cancer. His urine sample came back negative so his Dr phoned asking him to come in for a blood test.

I'm beside myself. DP I'd clearly worried and has gone quiet.

Not sure what I want or need but thankyou for reading x

My husband had this. He had a very enlarged prostate. He also had a very infected prostate at one point. Has had a couple of operations. He can now mostly urinate normally but libido has all but disappeared.

Did the infection show up in the blood tests? I've told DP to phone tomorrow morning to arrange an appointment to get the tests done. I hope so much it's nothing serious. I feel a bit dazed by it tbh, DP is a bit quiet so clearly playing on his mind.

I'm so sorry for what you and your DH went through. It must've been so scary. Its a huge wakeup call to just how fragile life is when something comes along so unexpected that changes your life forever. Sending you both love and healing ❤️

Has he been diagnosed with prostate cancer?

Summonedbybees · 12/11/2023 13:44

What are his PSA levels? These are calculated from a blood test.

Dawn17 · 12/11/2023 13:44

My dh had similar symptoms to prostate cancer. We were convinced he had it but thankfully, it turned out to be an infection that was easily treated.

First stage will probably be a psa test and a check to see if his prostate is enlarged.
My husband had a very enlarged prostate and a very high psa level. The consultant urologist told us he was looking for cancer and would not be surprised if he found it.
We were very lucky it was not but he did need a couple of ops and biopsy’s.
If your husband is having problems passing urine this can cause stones in the bladder which pass causing, pain, bleeding.
My husband had quite a while with a catheter and then had to learn to catheterise himself which he had to do for a few years. Now he only has to do it occasionally. He is prone to urine infections. As soon as he starts feeling any twinges it’s on to tons of water and can usually flush it clear before he needs antibiotics.
This will be a very frightening time for you both but because he has all these symptoms it doesn’t mean it’s cancer. Prostate cancer can have very good outcomes. The treatment now is so much better than years ago.

How old is he ? It's very common for men to have an enlarged prostate .

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 12/11/2023 20:06

@CambridgeLass

Has he been diagnosed with prostate cancer No, he has symptoms that are very similar. Dr called to rule out a UTI and asked him to come in ASAP for blood tests and another urine test.

He hasn't had the blood test yet. The Dr didn't say over the phone what he was testing but given his symptoms I'm assuming PSA will be checked.

I'm glad everything was OK with your DH. Hearing stories like this is very reassuring.

@sewingstockings Thankyou for sharing. My heart goes out to you both. I'm just glad to hear he came out the other end. It is quite frightening, its gard not to think of the 'what if's'. Some of the conditions that match his symptoms all sound so awful, and I know he's read them too but trying to push it to the back of his mind. I've told him about this thread and about the positive cases to try and help him not to worry.

@Lovemychair he's only 41

41 is very young for prostate cancer although not impossible I guess. My DH is now 77 and was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer about 18mths ago. He is on treatment and PSA which was initially high has reduced amazingly. Has 3 monthly blood tests and every time we get results it has gone down a bit more. Even advanced cancer is not necessarily the death sentence it once was and your DH may not even have it at all. Try not to assume the worst - although easier said than done I know.

@carpool thank you for posting this, it's given me some hope re prostate cancer. I hope your husband remains well.
