Anybody tell me what will happen at my appointment?

Had all that done 8 days ago and called this morning to say they want me to go back in tomorrow to see the consultant.

It's obviously not good news but any idea what I can expect at this appointment?

I don’t think it’s obviously bad news. In other threads many women are called face to face whatever the news.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 05/10/2023 19:30

Take a friend or advocate if you can, ask if you can record what's said as if it isn't the best of news you stop taking stuff in after the word cancer is mentioned.

I wish you well for tomorrow and hope you have the most positive outcome you can Flowers

weebarra · 05/10/2023 19:33

If it does turn out to be bad news, they will probably tell you that you will be discussed at their next multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting. They may know the stage and grade of the tumour, if it is cancer and this will inform the approach to treatment.
I would recommend you take someone with you who can support you and also take notes. You may also be given details of a breast cancer nurse who can also support.
When I was diagnosed, it was done the same day as my biopsy and ultrasound, but I had a lump. Good luck and I hope it's good news.

tothelefttotheleft · 05/10/2023 20:18

Thankyou for your replies.

They offered me a result appointment when they did all the tests but I didn't want to take an appointment if I didn't need it.

It was supposed to be a letter if nothing wrong and a telephone call otherwise.

Will be thinking of you today and hopefully it will be nothing.xx

Silkiebunny · 06/10/2023 14:40

If its cancer its to tell you that it is cancer, the size they currently estimate and the type, its worth taking a pen and paper. They normally give you the grade which is speed its growing at 1 is slowest, 2 is average, 3 is fast - this is different to stage. They tell you if its hormone positive or negative, hormone positive means no HRT and after treatment finished you get 5 to 10 years of tablets to take like Tamoxifen or similar.

They may or may not want more tests - for mine I had a MRI of the breast and CT of the middle part of me and then called back with results of those then the first stage of treatment plan. Hope if it is cancer they have caught it early. I think now you are allowed to take someone with you if that would help. Best to go in top and skirt / trousers rather than dress as they often check your breasts at these things. There's a cancer support thread on general health which will help you through it if it is cancer. Hope its not.

tothelefttotheleft · 06/10/2023 18:47

Well I came back to update the thread in case it helps anyone else but @Silkiebunny has already described what happened today!

Got a date for surgery too.

Thankyou for all the kindness you've shown me.

If anyone can link me to the general cancer thread I'd appreciate it. I can't seem to find it.

I took your advice and taped the meeting.

Everything that was said before the consultant told me I had cancer was immediately forgotten! I also took notes.

Thankyou.

There was a macmillan nurse at my appointment. She was great. She's going to ring me next week. She also gave me a pack of info to take away. Thankyou.

I’m sorry for your news today OP. Glad the consultant and nurse were so helpful. Wishing you all the best going forward. Xxxxx

tothelefttotheleft · 06/10/2023 18:54

@Silkiebunny

I'm going to have a CT scan too. I may have cancer elsewhere cos I have other medical issues. At my appointment they said the breast cancer is primary but we're happy to arrange a CT to reassure me.

How long did the CT apportionment take to sort?

I'm sorry to hear your news. The cancer thread is brilliant and got my through a really tough time.
If it helps at all, this week is my 10 year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. I was 36, with a 8 week old baby, a 3 year old and a 6 year old. My 6 year old is now a hulking stubbly man child and the baby is in her second last year of primary.
Good luck with everything!

Silkiebunny · 06/10/2023 19:00

Very quick, definitely within 2 weeks and can be as little as 24 hours. I had appointment Thurs pm with oncologist to discuss stage 4 symptoms and CT of head was 8.30am Monday. Its rare to have stage 4 straight away and usual to have other medical issues, I had about 8 issues flag on CT but not a spread. Hope it's ok, it's terrifying this part. Sending love.

Skap · 06/10/2023 19:04

Sorry to hear your news and I'm really surprised you weren't forewarned at the first appointment as many people are (they know when they see cancer on a mammogram, the biopsy just confirms it). I had breast cancer four years ago. I'm just waiting for the results of my 4 year scan.
You will find everything happens very quickly now, scans and appointments come in quickly. CT scans are quick and easy, the MRI is a little more challenging as you have to lie face down.
The breast care nurse will be your friend in these first few weeks (often a MacMillan nurse). She will answer all your questions however trivial you may think they are.
This is the cancer thread. I haven't visited it for a while but for about a year it was an absolute lifeline day and night.
There is also a great FB group for breast cancer.
Though I would caution you about social media. Some people breeze through treatment and others don't. Some don't look back afterwards and others dwell on it constantly.
Can I also recommend a book - Ticking Off Breast Cancer.

Do you have children to tell? Mine were in their 20s but I waited until I had all the answers before telling them. Feel free to pm me if I can help.
