Hope this is the right place to post. My father is receiving treatment for advanced kidney cancer, and struggling with poor appetite which is causing a lot of weakness.

Any advice on how to help him please would be gratefully received. Thank you.

When my DH wasn't eating we kept giving him mugs of tomato soup so he didn't feel like he was eating 'just having a drink' and full fat lattes / hot chocolate with cream etc on

There are specialist nutrition drinks that can probably be prescribed - Fresubin or similar?

KnickerlessParsons · 24/04/2023 23:24

Ask the GP to prescribe a nutritional high calorie drink like Fortisip or Aymes shakes.

Have you spoken to his doctors about energy dense drinks?

It's important to take a lead from him too as his body is busy with lots of things. Adding the need to digest more food isn't necessarily going to help, so be careful there.

I'm sorry, I do know how hard this is. Flowers

My sympathies, my dad went through this and his appetite disappeared he just couldn't stand anything in his mouth. It's an awful symptom when you need all the strength you can get.
Try forticeps drinks, frozen / fresh fruit in small pieces as we found this helped also

Wishing him a speedy recovery!

Has he seen a dietitian? Ask for a referral if not.

@NarcissusPalace I've been through the same with my Dad, we found strong tasting foods were better but he wasn't very interested in food to be honest. 😕

Thank you all for your suggestions. He spent almost a week in hospital, rehydrating and resting, and they changed the sickness meds which made a huge difference.
