Social care (and lack of)

My DM has terminal cancer and in the last two weeks has become very poorly to the point that in the last two days she has not eaten anything and is not able to sit propped up in bed. We know that this is part of the process of her reaching the end of her life.

She wanted/wants to stay at home. My DF and more so me, my DSis and DB have been providing care - from personal care to giving medicine etc, sleeping in her room overnight for the past fortnight. This is on top of the usual responsibilities with our children, jobs.

What had shocked me is that despite having the funding approved 6 days ago due a carer package to support my DM (and us) we have not had a single care visit and only sporadic visits from the district nurse. No one has picked up the funding and wanted to deliver the care so we don't get any.

I remember 10 years ago when my granny was ill she received care visits. I am so shocked that this is the state of social care - am I being naive and should I have expected this?!

I'm so sorry for people in this situation, we constantly get calls asking us to provide care to people in their homes
We often can't take on the work because we just don't have the capacity no matter how we try
Things have definitely got worse in the last few years

Thanks @Munchyseeds2 for all that you do. I am so shocked by the situation. We are lucky in the sense that there are a few of us but feel awful for those living alone or with less support.

@Bobbybobbins So sorry to hear this but also wanted to share as we are in exactly the same situation with my DM. We are three weeks post approved funding and still nothing. We're all running ourselves ragged trying to cover caring for DM in shifts. It's so so hard.

@sparklecrazy

So sorry to hear this and hope this changes for you guys. Unfortunately it didn't for us and my mum passed away yesterday, though she didn't need a lot of personal care at the end and the medical care was very good with a visit every day.

I'm so sorry for your loss 🙁.

I saw on the news this week that there are currently 600,000 people in the uk waiting for a care package

Have you contacted Marie Curie and MacMillan for advice?

Oh I'm so so sorry to hear this @Bobbybobbins Flowers
