End Stage Liver disease

My dad lives in a different country. He has spent most of his life a heavy heavy drinker and his alcoholism has destroyed his liver. He was admitted to hospital yesterday and had fluid drained from his abdomen.

I spoke to a doctor today and they don't expect him to leave the hospital. If he hadn't have been an alcoholic they'd have been looking for an urgent liver transplant. His kidneys are shutting down and he's struggling to breathe. Theyve said they have placed him under a dnr and will only treat him on the ward he's on. He wouldn't be ventilated and he won't go to intensive care.

My question is...how long? Ive looked online and the best answer is between 2 days and 2 years. However the doctor didn't seem to be favouring the 2 years but didn't want to be tied to a timescale obviously. I just want to be as prepared as I can be...do I need to say goodbye every time I speak to him?

Hello, I'm really sorry to hear about what your dad is going through. You may have come across us already, but if not, the British Liver Trust has a free nurse-led helpline you can contact for a chat. They're on 0800 652 7330 between 10am and 3pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) or email [email protected]. You can also have a look at our website at www.britishlivertrust.org.uk. I hope that helps.
