Hi I was wondering if anybody can give me some advice. My mum suffered from a stroke on friday , she went to the hospital they sent her home saying she had had a minor stroke and to rest. By the Saturday morning she had lost vision couldnt communicate. We waited nearly 2 hours for ambulance to arrive by the time they got her there and done tests they said that she had the stroke the day before so couldnt have the drugs needed . So her condition is at the moment her left artery in her neck is completely blocked , she has a clot on the left side of the brain and reduced vision in her left eye . Her right artery is blocked by 65%, She seems to not understand what people are saying and carnt communicate properly you can see shes trying her hardest to get out what she means . She is only 59 , the hospital shes in have said they dont understand why she was sent home from the other one when she was , and we have to wait for ct results and we can hope at best she regains some understanding and form of communication from the theropry, shes very emotional and distressed. I guess I'm asking has anybody had experience with this as in missed treatment , recovery from that. I guess I'm just at a loss and understand, no 2 strokes are the same aswell as no to people react in recovery the same.i know it's very early days but I'm wondering if theres any chance shell regain speech , I just carnt find anything positive around this sort off thing it's like shes missed the time frame and this is it now please any advice please

Hello, I just saw this and had to reply. My Mum had a stroke at 64, so I've been through this, if there's anything I can help with please ask x

I used to work in a stroke unit. The best outcomes arise from prompt treatment, but as you say, it is so variable and there's no way to tell for sure in the very early days how things will pan out.
Some people never spoke or walked again, others returned to almost full function. Rehab is key, and engagement with physio and occupational therapy.
Unfortunately she's now at risk of further strokes so needs to manage her health. Stop smoking is the biggie. Always. And get checked for diabetes and cholesterol, probably the biggest risk factors.
Take heart she's now getting the care she needs.

I'm very surprised they sent her home the first time. Did they do a CT then? they can give anticoagulant drugs to break down clots. Did they do this? was she sent home with any medication?

Similar happened to my DM but she had SAH, a sentinel bleed was missed on first admission. By the time she had a second bleed it was catastrophic.

They can operate on the cartoid arteries. Not sure if its possible, it must depend upon the individual.

I don't know much about recovery, I'm sorry. It does seem as though the first hospital missed the opportunity to treat your mum, but at the moment its probably better to focus on what can be done now.

Thankyou all for replying, I really dont understand why they sent her home with out medication or having the scan. That is somthing I'm not going to let go just need to find out what's happing to her first. The doctor said the left artery is completely blocked and they carnt operate on that, she seems to have some understanding today she knew who we were on the facetime call by was calling my young son by my brothers name. It's just so hard she suffers with diabetes already and is also on medication for high blood pressure my gran her mother suffered with strokes also she had 7 over 9 years and died at 63 due to a stroke. It's just so hard because we looked for help we went to a&e and they sent her home , it's so frustrating as this could have been prevented this outcome had she got the treatment she needed . I just have to pray she regains some form of understanding and communication, she was able to make a cup of tea in theropry shes has movement she has suffered in that sense it's just the speach and what understanding she has. Just shouldn't have happened we lost my dad at 52 to bowel cancer it was quick that was 6 years agao she finally met sombody else after 3 years he died whilst making tea due to brain hemorrhage, shes had the worst 6 years and now this it just feels so cruel
