Lump found- hand hold

Just that really.

For my Mum. Found a round lump which seems to be deep rooted, the base of her neck, just about her collarbone. I have tried to work out if this is a lymph node or not.

She has a few 'cold like' symptoms and she is convinced it could be just 'swollen'. I definately feel a lump when I press... it 'moves' quite freely seems to 'roll' between my fingers if that's makes sense. It's not hard ... feels like a grape.

I am so terrified. What is worse I can see she is also.

My Mum gets BUPA healthcare from her place of employment, they have been brilliant and scheduled a face to face zoom call tomorrow although will only invite you in person if they think it is serious... how on earth are they going to be able to tell over a video? Sad they can't feel anything surely.

Just a hand hold ....

I’m not an expert at all, but a mobile lump that feels like a grape sounds much more like a cyst.

But sending a handhold - it’s so frightening to find a lump xx

Thank you @akerman x

Hope it all goes well for your mum OP.

Lumene · 16/09/2020 14:45

How did it go OP? How are you doing?

Stargirl89 · 16/09/2020 15:19

Thanks @Lumene

Mum had the phone call and as she has felt 'well' in herself they told her to leave 2 weeks and then phone to have a face to face appointment with a doctor if hasn't cleared. I think we have a week left but I cannot see that making much difference. To be honest, not very helpful.....

I will be booking the appointment as she won't do this herself Sad

At the moment with COVID everyone is reluctant to see you face to face. It's a struggle just to get someone to actually check it, very scary. Probably won't her an appointment for weeks ...

Ah, that’s rough. Thinking of you xx

Lumene · 17/09/2020 00:18

Oh that’s tough waiting OP. Will keep fingers crossed.

That's an odd advice that your mum is given. The hard lump is hardly going to magically disappear in two weeks as it it is an insect bit or something...

A good friend of mine who lives in New Zealand found a similar lump net to collarbone last month and was immediately given further tests. Turned out to be nothing to worry about, but it needed checking.

Frankly I think GPs are also taking the piss at this stage by relying so much on phone consultations.

Hospital consultants are seeing patients face to face so I don't see why they can't do the same after a brief initial telephone screening by reception staff.

Put your foot down and ask for proper assessment.

Stargirl89 · 18/09/2020 18:14

@Requinblanc I completely agree.... I could cry.

Has she rang her own GP yet?

Crimblecrumble1990 · 18/09/2020 18:59

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but I would really push for a face to face consultation. My dad had lymphoma (although I think the lumps you describe sound a bit different to what his were like) and it took ages for him to get a diagnosis (pre covid). Kept being sent to the dentist etc. I'm quite laid back in life but have come to realise you do really need to be that annoying one who kicks up a fuss if you want action.

Stargirl89 · 18/09/2020 19:19

@Rudolphian yep, earliest appointment is 2 weeks.

@Crimblecrumble1990 that is very true- can I ask what the lumps felt like for your rather and where they were? I hope he is ok now x

Hi, they started in his neck. They were a little bit uncomfortable although he felt well in himself apart from maybe more tired. It definitely felt more like swelling as opposed to anything under the skin like a grape. They would disappear and come back and seemed to move around. Then more lumps in his groin/armpit. It took him from finding the first lump to getting diagnosed around 7 months but he had chemotherapy and it's been in remission for 2 years now. I hope your mum gets some answers soon xx

Stargirl89 · 18/09/2020 20:21

Thank you for telling me. @Crimblecrumble1990 we are very lucky I think with the medical advances we have nowadays however it doesn't change the scary c word. Thank you so much. I will keep this thread updated. Does help talking to people x

Stargirl89 · 08/10/2020 18:00

Thanks @@Rudolphian it is still there although feels like swelling now!

We have a scan booked in on Monday 12th... finally. After about 5 telephone calls Sad

Hi all,

Update from this morning as an Ultrasound scan was performed on my Mum.

She had the scan and it was just showing as a 'fatty lump'. I am sure there is more technical terms used! But that's what she was told straight away.

I am extremely relieved but also feel lucky we got the 'clear'. It makes me really think how much cancer effects peoples lives. I am continuously giving to charity and will do so even more now. I am happy for my Mum as she was very worried.

Thank you for all your lovely comments x
