Nan starving in hospital, is this right?

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice as I have absolutely no idea what the usual protocol for someone in my nan's situation is.

She has an inoperable oesophageal tumour and was told that when it became so as she couldn't eat nor drink, a stent would be fitted.

Well that time has come. She is currently in hospital awaiting her stent.

She is currently nil by mouth and feeding through a tube is not an option as her throat is too closed for the tube to fit.

Where I am confused is that she went into hospital on Sunday and they have put back her surgery twice so that now they are saying they won't be able to put the stent in until next Tuesday! That will leave her at 9 days with no food! They are stating that she is receiving glucose and that is enough but I am concerned. She is only skin and bone as it is.

Am I completely being silly and worrying over something that is completely fine or is this wrong? I completely understand why she can't be fed but surely the surgery should be done ASAP in that case to avoid her starving to death?

Sorry for rambling, just very worried. Sad thanks in advance!

Hi OP

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your concern but Macmillan Cancer Support may be able to help. There is a helpline number on their website plus there is a forum for discussing any concerns you have. Hope this helps x

Hi OP Glad to have been of some help. Macmillan are really good. They have been a big support for me. You may also find they have a Macmillan centre at your nan's hospital where you can go to and have a cuppa and chat with them about your worries. Let me know how you get on x
