Please help with relative with an anal tumour

A loved one of mine has anal cancer. It's so horrible, he can't sit down at all, he's either lying on his front or standing at all times. He's not even old.

Does anyone know of any contraptions whereby you're sitting down but without any pressure on the bum area? I'd love to relieve his discomfort. Thanks in advance.

What about one of those cushions shaped like a donut that you can use after giving birth?

marmiteloversunite · 02/03/2018 20:56

You can get a wedge shaped cushion with the coccyx area cut out. Might work? My daughter has coccyx pain and she finds it useful.

Yes, to the coccyx cushion. Worth a try. Your poor relative, how utterly uncomfortable. Flowers

Thank you kind people who have replied. The important thing is to push the buttocks together, anything which pulls them apart is agony. I'm not sure any sort of cushion would work. I don't really know what I'm after, something that tilts him while standing but takes the weight of his feet, so half way between sitting and standing? It's just so miserable. Thank you, your replies alone have made me feel better.

Wow that's difficult. Can your relative ask to see an occupational therapist to see if they have any ideas?

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/03/2018 21:12

Would something like this coccyx chair work? It looks as if it combines the cushion shown above with one of those 'kneeling chairs'.

Poor guy. I hope you manage to find something that suits.

Such a difficult problem. The Heloing Hand Starlock cushion might help?

No experience but a 'valley cushion' might help

Does reading this thread help at all?:

The hospital's occupational therapist should have seen him before he left hospital - I think he should get on to them on Monday about it as I'm sure there'll be something they can do to help.

marmiteloversunite · 02/03/2018 21:17

The OT's can do home visits and do as much as possible to adapt the home suitably.

MiracleAccidentMistake · 02/03/2018 21:17

Just thinking with the Starlock cushion you could inflate the cells either side of his cheeks to push the buttocks together and deflate the cells underneath to decrease pressure?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/03/2018 21:20

That's a miserable situation for your friend to be in. DDad passed away due to bladder cancer that then caused a large secondary tumour by the perineum area. He could only sit if leaning right back with feet up so resting on his lower back rather than his bottom.

Ebayaholic · 02/03/2018 21:24

I've sent the kneeling chair and cushion to my cousin (his son). The thread which was linked to looks really helpful too.

Thank you so much- and I'm sorry for anyone else whose relatives have suffered in this way too Thanks

putnams.co.uk/collections/all-products/products/sero-pressure-cushion

It can be bought with cut outs to allow for pressure points to be removed. Also a toilet chair with a sheepskin (real not faux) folded over on placed on the seat is meant to be like sitting on air. Not very glam but in the privacy of his home it may be ideal!

Thank you worldsworstcook, those reviews are really good

Hi here is a photo of what my mum has on her chair which she says helps. She said my brother bought it off Amazon for around £14 for her. She said this one is a bit harder than she wants and would prefer one that is s bit softer.

Am sorry about your loved one. It is awful. My thoughts and prayers are with you all xxx

Anal cancer is absolutely one of the most painful cancers to have, as there are so many nerve endings in that region. Can he speak to the drs again to ty to get a level of pain relief sorted so that he can rest comfortably ?

GirlsBlouse17 · 25/03/2018 21:42

My mum was told she may have to have a colostomy bag. She didn't like the idea of this but has since come round to it. One person I know who has one has said it's the best thing she had done and her life is so much better now. And they are discreet and you wouldn't know someone had one, and are easy to maintain too.

I mention this because maybe it's something your loved one might consider if need be
