Creation of a downstairs bed area for my terminally ill Dad

He has a brain tumour (post Lung Cancer) & will need to be in bed permanently fairly soon

My mum plans to put a spare single bed in the dining area of the through lounge/dining/kitchen

I think this is less than ideal as he will be in the thoroughfare between all rooms (conservatory/lounge/kitchen)

Now I totally understand her need to have him downstairs & 'part of the family' not 'trapped upstairs to die'

But I'm not sure this is the best way to ensure it happens - he will have no privacy, no quiet the area can be seen from the road in 2 directions

I don't have a solution but think that is a bad one

It's all a bit confusing at the moment - we were expecting a referral to palliative care based on our previous discussion & all of a sudden they have decided to treat him

I guess that postpones these discussions

But I think part of the problem is my mum & dad want different things

Even if still getting treatment you should still be able to get a ref to the local community nurse team for support if nothing else.

In our area you can get just in case meds as well, which are meds to keep in the home for any issues like pain or nausea. It saves having to run around trying to find a chemist open over a wend or evening if there is a problem.

Hi everyone we are soon to be in this situation with df.He has decided he want s to die at home.Recently his journey with advanced aggressive small cell cancer has taken a turn for the worse. He stopped chemo in March .Recently getting 3 infections in a row with temps of 102 and a and e refferals for antibiotics intraveinously.
Today he collected his just in case pack of meds.
Luckily my parents have two rooms off their lounge so one will eventually be kitted out with hosp bed for him where the glass doors can be shut and a curtain put up.He has signed a DNR too.Mum hopes to be his carer assuming her cancer isnt back by then.Sad times really but they have plenty of us to help.
