had our post op meeting today which we were very nervous about.
DH (age 44) dx with advanced, terminal prostate cancer a few months ago.
Gleason score of 7 (the bad way round), PSA 135.
Had a huge prostate + lymph nodes removal op in july.

Today, we heard his cancer had been upgraded to Gleason 9, but they were happy with the margins they found, just one small area of positive margin which they will zap with radiotherapy. His PSA was down to "undetectable, less than 0.1".

After being told it was a death sentence, we now have some hope that dh may even possibly be cancer free!!!!! Realistically, probably somewhere in between of course.

Anyway. Good news indeed, and I love our surgeon!!!!! He has literally saved dh's life.

Have hope everyone. Smile

So lovely to hear some good news! Flowers

That's great, especially the PSA level - my Dad's into year 13 since his 'terminal' prostate cancer diagnosis, and he's still going strong at age 87 :)

Gumblossom · 16/09/2014 23:37

This is wonderful news!

You have given me some hope. Thanks My dad has a Gleason score of 7.5. I'm waiting to hear what will happen next.

1805 · 16/09/2014 23:45

Gumblossom - this proves the need to remain positive. Never give up the fight, never give up the hope.

From what I gather, there are several forms of treatment and you need to be able to discuss these over with your team. Are you happy with the system so far? Keep strong. Flowers

That is fantastic news, 1805. Thanks for posting! Wine Cake Flowers

Gumblossom · 17/09/2014 11:44

Thankyou 1805. I wish my mum was more of a positive person. She has been so negative about the whole thing. I heard today that the cancer is contained in the prostate, which I think is wonderful news, but my mum was still doom and gloom Sad. He'll have the op next week.

One day at a time...

1805 · 17/09/2014 17:38

Gumblossom, It is hard keeping other people positive, but keep at it, and make sure she doesn't get you or your dad down too.

Your dad sounds as though he'll be ok. Is he having the DaVinci surgery? That is truly amazing technology.

If I can help with any surgery info, please do PM me or ask on here. I really hope all goes well for him. Flowers

Hi
That's wonderful news & gives people hope. My dad was diagnosed with advanced terminal prostate cancer in 2012 Gleason score 7 & which had spread to nearby lymph nodes & possibly the spine(they couldn't be 100% certain about the spine as it was a very small white patch on scan) & was told he wouldn't be able to have surgery so was put on a clinical trial in the form of hormone patches. These have done the trick at the moment & his psa is 0 but we were told the patches last around 3 years before the cancer would outdo them. We're all finding it very hard to accept its terminal & I'm praying they find new treatments, I just wonder why he wasn't able to have surgery like your dh as it sounds very similar to what my father was diagnosed with. I'm so pleased things are looking better for you.

1805 · 20/09/2014 12:49

we were told that dh's cancer was not suitable for surgery too, but (mainly because of dh's age) the surgeon was prepared to "have a go". We had to wait for that particular surgeon to have a space, because he said that if dh was put on the general waiting list, he would get crossed off it.

I hope the treatment works for your dad titchy. good luck.

Fantastic news Flowers

Exactly a year ago my lovely MIL was told that breast cancer had returned, tumour in liver as well, cells in various places. It was looking vv bleak.

She had chemo again and achieved the best case scenario. The tumours are being managed well. I don't know anything about the technical stuff. I do know that the medication she is on is doing its job

She's vibrant and fighting. Yes, she tires easier than before. We have had to make adaptions as a family. It occurred to me recently that as a family we have learnt to live with incurable cancer. And live we do. MIL will be coming to Centre Parcs with us at half term and she's looking forward to getting her swimming cossie on.

Our dc are young (6 and 3). They haven't even noticed that her hair is different (now its grown back). It's really hard sometimes but it is possible to live with a bleak diagnosis and still have a quality of life. But I know this is not the case for all.
