Hello, I've name-changed because of the nature of our problem and I really hope you don't mind a heterosexual woman posting here. I am new to Mumsnet and some kind ladies directed me here.

My husband has occasionally suffered from erectile dysfunction when under pressure to perform and since TTC has taken our will to live recently he has found it much, much harder to ejaculate around ovulation time. I have tried keeping my fertile window to myself but he knows (why else would I want sex three days on the trot? Hmm). He can usually ejaculate the first time of asking (so perhaps two days before ovulation) but then the two successive attempts are a shambles. I suggested he masturbate into a cup and my sister gave me an old syringe she used to use for her baby's ibuprofen. It seems like any other kind of syringe so we used it for the first time today.

What I am here for is to shamelessly ask for some encouraging stories from women who have self-inseminated. Which days did you inseminate and where did you buy your kit from? Is it essential to use one of those vaginal clamp things that a doctor would use during a smear (I don't have one)? Am I being pathetic to think this could work? I only have one fallopian tube, too Sad

Hello, I don't usually post but I know what it's like being in the DIY insemination process so thought I'd offer some thoughts based on our experience (OH got pregnant first time so we must have done something right!)

We inseminated two days before ovulation then the evening before. We heard sperm can live for a couple of days so seemed better to go earlier than later. Also we were recommended to leave at least a 24hr gap between donor ejaculating so his supply could build.

We got a kit from a company called pronippa, that had a speculum (the vaginal clamp thing) but in the end only used the 10ml syringe and sterile pot. You can also use a soft cup that you put sperm into so less exposure to air, but I think a few (actually quite a lot) air bubbles didn't stop it working in our case.

Partner laid her pelvis on some cushions and after insemination we left in the syringe for 10mins just to make sure we didn't create an air lock and hoover the little guys out.

Also, I know there's no evidence that an orgasm helps cervix take in sperm, but we added that before and after insemination for fun and just in case!

It can work!

Hi
Sorry your having problem. My partner and I used self insemination and it worked 2nd time round.
All the tips from southLondon baby apply we just used a normal syringe and a pelvis tilt to ensure it went as close to the cervix as possible.
Best of luck with it all xx
