Drink Driving, Am i being unreasonable to want him to learn his lesson?

A friend of the family was caught last week drink driving at 2am after beleiving that his ex-girlfriend had been seeing another guy. He rung her at least 20 times and when she didnt answer (it was 2am and she has 2 small children) he convinced hisself that someone was with her.
We tried to stop him but he refused, stormed out of the house and jumped into his car, he was blind drunk and pulled by the police, he is still driving and is awaiting his court date.
What is really annoying me is that he is claiming that he is depressed and that has led him to drinking, he claims to be depressed about his ex but he left her, he's with a different girl everynight and doesnt care about his children.
He is now boasting that he will be let off in court on the grounds of being depressed about the break up, this is tosh and he is out drink driving every night and playing jack the lad.
I am so angry and have told him numerous times about drink driving, I am now refusing to speak to him but he is adament he will be let off due to depression.
Is there anything I could say to the police without being dragged into it all? I dont want to seem like a busy body but I have tried and tried with this guy and nothing is getting through to him.
Will he be let off?

I work in this field and if he has given a positive sample his is very highly unlikely not to get the 12 month mandatory 12 months disqualification. I have heard lots of stories where I have been shocked that the circumstances did not prevent someone from getting a ban. I'm willing to put my mortgage on him being off the road for 12 months once he is seen in court.

Is this in Cornwall?

A chap scrote crashed a stolen van, out of hours, into the warehouse where someone I know works, and caused a fair bit of damage.

The police arrived, caugt him, and then the chap claimed that he was "depressed". The police advised the company that it would not be worthwhile pressing charges in this case as he could well be let off by the court due to his "depression".

So much for justice!

He may be let off the first time because of his depression, but what about the second, third or fourth time? Start calling the police every time he goes out drunk, and yes I would have a quite word with an officer and explain everything you've said above. I know you don't want to get too involved, but what if he injures or worse kills someone while he's out?

I hate drink drivers with a passion. Absolute scum.

He has no chance of avoiding at least a 12 month ban.

Don't fret about it, the magistrates have no option but to ban him in those circs.

mumblechum · 08/07/2010 13:26

Rentatoast, that's very very strange. I think there is a bit missing in that story tbh.

Rentatoast · 08/07/2010 13:44

It seems strange but did happen.

Actually, the person who told me this is one of the directors of the company. He thought, this person intended to steal some materials (it is a small engineering firm).

The chap claimed that he crashed into the building because he was depressed and wanted to commit suicide. The police said such cases were "difficult" and it was unlikely that it would result in a prosecution.

I don't know about the stolen van side of it.

Maybe I was not told the full details, I'm not making it up. I'm not going to name the company for obvious reasons.

cestlavielife · 08/07/2010 13:45

drink driving gets a 12 month ban. full stop. doesnt matter "why" ther eis no excuse - if you follow the logic that depression makes him drink adn drive then he needs a ban anyway til he can be proved non-depressed!

Rentatoast · 08/07/2010 13:46

Je ne suis pas un troll!

chase333 · 08/07/2010 14:10

No it isnt in Cornwall,

He's been caught before but just passed the breath test so this isnt his 1st time.

I hope something happens to teach him a lesson. feel abit better now!
