How do I find out who owns the land adjoining my own?

Ongoing problems with mahoosive leylandii on a tiny strip of land in between the road and the front boundary of my property.

I've contacted the council, they have checked and say the land is not theirs. A neighbour told me it belonged to another neighbour, but it turns out that this is not the case.

Is there any way I can somehow apply to find out who legally owns the land? I want to contact them and get their permission to get a tree surgeon in to chop the trees down (in fact it is an overgrown hedge, so legally they are obliged to keep it to 2m max, and they are easily 45ft plus. I am not bothered about getting them to do anything, I just want to get rid of the trees, which are very unhealthy and a real blight on my property.)

Yes, first of all you need to do a check on the Land Registry website. Once on the site, look under eServices for 'find a property', and a form will come up asking for the address. As it probably doesn't have an address, you need to choose the "detailed enquiry" option at the bottom, which will give you the option of doing a map enquiry. It may not be on that either, in which case you need to follow information about requesting a manual Search of the Index Map - whereby you send them a map showing the land you're interested in, and they will tell you if it is registered and if so to whom. It costs £5.

Thanks so much for this info - in a few minutes and for £8 I have tracked down the owner of the land!
