car accident last year. Other party now claiming for injury. Any advice?

I had an accident last year where I went into the back of someone due to someone on the other side of the road pulling out from behind a bus and the car in front of me doing emergency stop. The conditions were very wet and after brakeing the car went into the car in front. The person called the police who came. The driver said it happened due to the third person pulling out in front of the bus (careless driving) who had drove off. There was no damage at all the the car I hit and my grid under the front was slightly dented. That was it we went on our way. I received a letter at weekend telling me that Another was claiming for injury and to contact them with my insurance details as they assumed I was uninsured at the time of accident because no details were passed. They have been notified who the insurance is with as my solicitor said if I didn't they could take out a criminal case assuming I was uninsured.

Our insurance is due for renewal again in August and my husband is livid because he says our premiums will be doubled. He had wanted to hold off telling them for as long up til then so we could renew again and not have to worry about it for another year.

Can anyone give me advice as to will this affect the premiums and will it have been put through before August. My solicitor said it mightn't but that we should let them know rather than putting it off. Any help appreciated.

You need to tell your insurance company straight away, and tell them what happened - and they will speak to the other party's insurer and they will agree what needs to be paid, if anything.

If you renew your insurance without telling them about the accident (even if it is an automatic renew) then in the event of a future accident, your insurance company could claim that you deliberately witheld information, which could either invalidate your insurance, or reduce your level of cover - not worth taking the risk.

I would think Megan is right be honest and tell them, they may contest the payment if it was a long time ago [this happened to my bro but as the accident had happened 9 months previously there was no pay out and no extra premium penalties] and it would be a non issue when renewing in regards to the premium costs

You definitely need to tell them, the date of the accident will be clear when the details do get to them and they could refuse you cover as you failed to declare the accident at the time. There is no reason your premium will double -I made a large claim on our insurance within a month of taking it out and it's barely changed on renewal.

Thanks I will notify them in the morning and let them know. I had only assumed you passed insurance details if there was damage and the other person never asked.
