going back to maiden name and titles. Miss or Ms?

I'm in the middle of divorce, and would love to go back to my maiden name. Does anyone know if I have to do a deed poll, like the dead poll website states, or if the decree absolute will be enough for the banks etc?
Also if I deed poll, do I have to choose whether I become Miss or Ms,and what are the significances of these 2 titles??
Thanks

I know it's different in Scotland (we don't have Deed Poll) but up here you only have to tell everyone who might care that you're changing your name to whatever; my friend took an ad out in the local paper, too. (That was 12 years ago, though.)

But I suppose what with terrorism an' all, it might be different now.

As to title, you can be Miss, Ms or even Mrs if you want; there's no real significance to them. Miss to me suggests that you've never been married, Mrs says that you are or have been, and Ms says it's none of my business.

OH MS! Because, as the OldLady (kind of) says, it's nobody's business. Or at least, it isn't until it's the norm for men to declare their marital status.

And you don't have to pronounce it like a weird vowel-less freakword, either. The US style 'mizz' is perfectly fine.

HTH!

Thank you, I think I will go for Ms, so it will still be a bit of reinvention for me, old name but new title!

Oh good - and Good luck!

Tis what I did... Decree absolute will be enough.

Mind you, the number of people mis-hear so I have documents saying Miss ans Mrs....

hey ho...

Yes and be prepared to go through hell with the banks...The computer won't like it and will want to see multiple copies of divorce paperwork no doubt.

LittleMissHissyFit · 04/06/2010 21:35

I never had a problem with the bank... FirstDirect, mind you it was a few years ago...

I would suggest doing it now before your divorce. As a married woman you are entitled to use whatever name you so wish, there is no legal requirment to be Mrs X when you used to be Miss Y

If you still have your marriage certificate use this to prove conection of the two names. You will be badgered as to a reason why but all you have to say is that you are resorting to your maiden name and provide the proof. I changed back to my maiden name, consulted a solicitor first and she advised tme this was the best way (I'm widowed so still had my Marriage Certificate). The passport was the easiet one but yes banks do get sniffy, just quote "by law, as a married woman I am entitled to use EITHER name"

I'm First Direct too Little miss!
Didn't have any probs whatsoever. Went back to maiden name with divorce papers. No hassel. Went for miss too as didn't want the comments from some that you tend to get about ..."oh....MS eh? Divorced then?)
