Parking fine at school run

js1000 · 19/03/2010 19:36

I am really upset, as I got parking tkt whn i went inside the school to pickup kids. My car was on double yellow, there are no single lines on that street. I was only away for 6 min. ( on ticket time is 3.35pm -3.41pm.
I think its v unfair because they purposely come at 3.30 when they know parents are going to be inside the school.
Is it worth appealing against it?

Glad you got a ticket.
Shows that the trafic pigs were doing their jobs.
That'll teach ya!

CleverlyConcealed · 19/03/2010 20:25

I had to help a child who was hit by a car outside primary some years ago. Perhaps if it was your ten year-old who got knocked down crossing between two illegally parked cars then you might think differently.

It's selfish.

Clarissimo · 19/03/2010 20:26

I note the OP has disappeared

CleverlyConcealed · 19/03/2010 20:35

Yes it's one of those Friday evening wind ups.

More boring than a boring thing.

Clary · 19/03/2010 20:42

Why don't you walk to school then?

Might stop you getting a letter home about overweight kids (arf).

I asked a woman not to park on the yellow zigzag outside school today. She told me she was just picking up XXX (XXX, a student I think, then walks out of school).

I repeated, but you're not supposed to park on the zigzags. She said, I know, but I'm just picking up XXX

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 20:44

It's worth appealing

I got one last year

the chap didn't know it was school pickup, he was new - ALL the parents park in this tiny street because there simply is no other parking within half a mile or so, if that -

not free anyway, and who wants to pay 2 quid a day to park for roughly 10 minutes each way? It would be infeasible.

The wardens tend to give us a wide berth at drop off and pick up, because they know it's bloody difficult for many of us. I got off on my first ticket as a first offence, as it were.

It's a stressful situation every time we have to drive in. I've even emailed the parking person at the council offering to buy a sodding permit but there's a massive waiting list and you're not allowed if you aren't a resident - I said I'd pay a special fee every year just to park twice a day for 5 minutes but he wouldn't even countenance a scheme like that. Many streets have pay meters, this one doesn't. No idea why.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 20:47

can't understand the massive flaming of OP

I'm not talking about yellow lines anyway - it's unused residents' spaces. It's a joke, nobody uses them apart from at school pick up etc, it's clear within minutes of the bell.

Of course nobody parks on the zig zags - actually we don't have any because it's such a tiny street and one way, and everything goes dead slow along it.

Clary · 19/03/2010 20:52

sausagepastie maybe if your child was run over by a car they couldn't see because of cars parked illegally then you might undersatnd posters' irritation with people who park inconsiderately or illegally near school.

or if you could barely cross the road at 3.30pm because of all the madly driving cars who cannot park 100 yards from school ...

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 20:56

I can see that Clary but with respect all schools are different and it is a very different set up where we are

The spaces are designated parking spaces, not illegal in most part - just they are being used by parents instead of residents for a short period during the day.

Soem parents live a good few miles from school and have little alternative but to drive

we walk when we can but are further than most. I'd happily pay if it was possible but they make no provision to, then penalise occasionally by having a swoop. It's shit.

CleverlyConcealed · 19/03/2010 21:00

She's being flamed (if you like) because she's parking on double yellow lines and putting other people's children at risk and then wingeing because she got caught.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 21:07

how do you ascertain that she put anyone at risk?

It might have been during the day when he had an appointment etc

she didn't say much about it. A bit much to go jumping on her like that.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 21:08

? yikes.

JackBauer · 19/03/2010 21:12

what Laurie said, word for word.

Careful, OP will come back on and say they have an extenuating circumstance.hmm

So I'll get "walk you lazy fecker" in before she does. grin

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 21:15

think I will leave you lot to it.

CleverlyConcealed · 19/03/2010 21:18

It was 3.35 sausage - most schools turn out at that time.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 21:22

sorry I forgot she had specified the time.

Ours turns out at 3.15, by 3.35 the street would be empty.

My only real point is it's unwise to leap on someone without knowledge of all the facts. (and prob unwise to defend them with such a poor memory as mine..)

frasersmummy · 19/03/2010 21:22

blue badge does allow you to park on double yellows but you must not cause an obstruction or endanger other road users

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 21:24

and please, please leave off withthe

it's so pointless.

JackBauer · 19/03/2010 21:28

But sausage, the OP has said she parked on double yellows and got fined. Really there is no reason for this, they are there for a reason, the situation/time is irrelevant.

We have police officers around DD1's school a few times a week as if someone parks on the double yellows the road is impassable for fire engines o ambulances as they are wider. I know this as I was there when it took 20 minutes for a fire engine to get to the school gates with the alarm going and no-one knowing why.

sausagepastie · 20/03/2010 07:03

Jack that can be the case but it can equally be that the road IS passable by emergency services and it doesn't cause a problem for anyone.

Sure we all have situations in mind where it would or wouldn't be a big deal but really, more information is required before snap judgments are made about the OP and particularly before she is attacked so wildly.

Sometimes people just want an excuse to be blunt, rude and fairly vicious and so they take it all out on some poor sod who happens to post something suggesting they may have been in the wrong.

I think it's bad form.

Goblinchild · 20/03/2010 07:38

As a school, we tried to get parents to obey parking rules.
We asked nicely in a newsletter.
We pointed out firmly in a newsletter.
We reminded children in assemblies to remind their parents.
We got the premises officer to stand outside on rainy mornings and evenings to point out what parents were doing was illegal.
The head and teachers took turns on a rota.
Then we told the police. Fines and threats of legal action worked best of all.
Disabled can use the staff car park.
