Am a lurker and very occasional poster and could do with some advice!!

Apologies for this being rather long and boring!!

I had a tooth abscess last week, went to the dentist who gace me antibotics and made an appointment for me to go in for a root filling today.

So, there I am in the chair, he's drilling away and finds the filling which was in my tooth is actually a temporary filling. The nurse reads through my notes and finds that they were giving me a root canal in that tooth in 2007 but had to stop as I got pregnant and couldn't have x-rays.
During my pregancy the dentist changed so when I went back for a couple of fillings, after having DD this was never picked up on. I have no memory of this, but had a very young toddler, was moving house, living at in-laws for a while as house wasn't ready, DD was a bit early and did not sleep, fed all the tme ets etc so to be fair that whole year is a blur!!

My point is, I need a crown now. On the NHS I can only get a metal one and a ceramic (?) one will be £350. However I may well have not needed a crown had it not been left for 2/3 years and the cost of the root canal, etc would have been covered by the fact I was on maternity and didn't need to pay for dental at the time.

Does anyone have any idea on whether I have a case to go to my dentist and say they should cover some of the cost??

Thanks in advance!!

If you were seeing your dentist on the NHS at the time, you might be able to make a complaint to your PCT and ask them to consider covering some or all of the cost.

You say your dentist changed - how long after the pregnancy did you see your new dentist?

The PCT might take the position that, as you were the patient, you must have known you were in the middle of the treatment plan so could have followed it up with your new GDP, but then again this might well fall under your GDP's duty of care.

For further advice, look up your local ICAS service and talk to them. It won't cost you anything.
