my Mum keeps telling me that a Will that has been sorted out-or whatever the legal term is-can be public knowledge and so anyone can look at it.Is this true?

My hubbie's Dad died 20 years ago and his wife never, ever mentioned the Will-if there was one-to either him or his brother. Now that this lady has also passed away, they are trying to find out what happened to anything they MIGHT have been entitled to.Unfortunately, their step-sister is not forthcoming with any information so hubbie's asked me to do a bit of research.
Anyone know how we can go about this?My Mum told me that my own Dad was able to get a copy of his Father's will some 20 years after his death and she doesn't think he even paid for it.Has the law changed.I know that Wills used to be publshed in papers at one time and maybe she's got a facts slightly wrong!!!

try the probate office here

Yes once probate has been granted a will is publicly accessible. If you google it you'll find lots of companies who will search for you for a fee but here is government information about te Probate Service and details of finding the appropriate probate registry.

They're very sneaky aren't they CS? Lots of the websites look very official and have very official-sounding names as well.
