Is there any reason why I need to keep paperwork regarding a property I have sold?

Obviously I need details of the sale itself for tax purposes but is there any reason i need to keep any of the other bumph - lease, structural reports, etc? I'm about to chuck them but thought I'd better to check with you wise ladies...

i know. it's one thing they never teach you at school - how to manage your personal affairs - admin etc. covers all kinds of subjects. i reckon they should!

I have disposed of all that - except the house details from when we bought them for nostalgia purposes! Can't imagine ever needing to produce them.

have just been through it all. there's a good couple of telephone directories worth. will be v satisfying to chuck. Though now there's the "to shred or not to shred" question...

Yes you do. HM Revenue & Customs can investigate if they think you've underpaid Stamp Duty Land Tax. The time limit is either 6 years or 12 years, can't remember which, sorry.

thanks seabright but wd that necessitate hanging onto anything other than the documents relating to the financial transaction ie not to any building works, etc. do i need to keep my old lease???

Keep the legal & mortgage papers. Building work - no, probably not, unless they were related to any loan or staged-payment arrangement or similar.
