Electricity supplier back-billing dispute and default after delayed billing

Terrysnotmine · 19/08/2026 21:57

I was taken off a prepayment electricity meter by my supplier in December 2024. They didn't bill me until February 2026, a bill of over £2,500.

They have put a default on my credit file due to non payment. I now have got them to remove £1,000 as according to OFGEM they cannot bill somebody for electricity used over 12 months ago if it is the suppliers fault. They also had me on the most expensive tarrif and didn't supply me with a home monitor for me to measure my usage.

I put a complaint in and I am insisting that everything is in writing so there is a paper trail. They have told me the complaint is now closed as they have taken £1,000 off. I have said I do not want the complaint closed.

I am still left with a huge bill that I would never of had of They had billed me as they should of done, what are my rights on getting this sorted please?.

What did you think would happen when you didn't pay for any electricity for 14 months?

PrincessofWills · 19/08/2026 22:05

Ombudsman.

That's the suppliers fault not the customer they know the rules they chose to ignore them

Back billing is actually quite complicated. It’s not just a case of you can’t be liable to pay if your supplier doesn’t send you a bill. You have to also actively chasing a bill and a resolution. They can also argue you could have put the money aside. If you are on Facebook there is a really good group for advice Facebook group energy support and advice. Speak to citizens advice and you can go to the ombudsman if your supplier has issued a final response and you are not happy.

They’ve taken off the amount for over 12 months so they’ve now corrected the amount due.

You owe the rest. You can’t claim you owe nothing because it took them 12 months to bill you, which they can.

Perhaps agree a payment plan.

It's not quite as simple, they put me on thr most expensive tariff, didn't give me anything to monitor my usage, I am entitled to the warm home discount and don't know if thay has been applied. I also phoned on a few occasions and no one could find my account.

Ombudsman.

She can do that because she doesn’t feel like her complaint has been resolved but what is her actual complaint? They’ve corrected the bill so that it reflects 12 months rather than 14 months. She is probably trying to get more money off but an ombudsman will also consider her behaviour, will presumably includes knowingly not paying anything for 14 months.

Given the other circumstances I quoted above the CAB have told me I can. I am just looking for advice about what else can be done. A payment arrangement is in place

Were they obliged to provide you with a home monitor? Did you arrange for one?

The tariff is presumably their non-fixed? Did you set to a fixed and they’ve disregarded that?

Warm home discount - did you receive your notification that you’re getting it? If so, then that’s something to include in your complaint and if they maintain the complaint is closed, then tell them you’re referring to the ombudsman.

Lougle · 19/08/2026 22:17

So you've been charged, now, £1500 for 12 months' usage. That's £125 per month.

If you look at the cheaper tariff, what would 12 months' usage be?

I was told.i would get something to monitor my usage. My electricity supplier called me and told me it was no longer safe to be on a pre payment meter and that they would put me on the lowest tariff. Yes, I had letters to confirm my entitlement to the warm home discount.

They told me on the phone a couple of days ago that my electricity usage is £90 a month in winter and £60 in summer. As they didn't bill me and I had no way of monitoring my usage I have no idea if that amount is even correct.
