Potential Witness in Court - Holidays

OtterlyFabulous · 07/07/2026 14:34

I was a witness to a crime when passing by one of our local pubs.
I received a letter asking for my availability from August 2026 to September 2027 however when submitting my availability online this changed to August 2028. At present I have no issues with my availability but our family has a big birthday next year (40th) and another the year after (18th) of which we would be hoping to travel to celebrate. As I have not yet recieved a citation for court and may not (if the timings online are to be believed) for another 2 years would I be able to book a holiday and just change my availability online as well as submitting evidence of it? The letters I have received have both stated I may becalled as a witness but it isn't a given. I have tried calling the number on the letter however no one is answering anytime I have attempted to.

I think if you book a holiday before the court date is set, you should be OK.

You cannot be expected to put your life on hold indefinitely.

Go ahead and make whatever plans you like because you may never be called. My husband witnessed a crime a few years ago and received a similar letter, then as the trial approached they checked his availability for specific dates, asked him to keep them free and await more information. A few months later we learned that the trial had happened from the news, but they didn't call him as a witness for whatever reason.
