We don't do free half hours, as we're aware that people often use many solicitors in this way, and when they ask questions it's always about what another solicitor has told them, and without context, it's impossible to give accurate advice.
A half hour session is for the person to assess whether they think the solicitor can help them, and not to get specific legal advice.
We charge a fixed rate for a no obligation 45 minute telephone session - the person can provide an over view of their situation, and get basic initial advice that allows them to determine whether the solicitor is right for them or not.
We also offer the option to email a query for £25. It's just general advice on what can be done in the person's circumstances, and isn't intended as legal advice though. Lots of people like to ask a question and then feel able to cope by themselves with the answer given.
The point is, lots of solicitors do as our firm does, lower payments for initial guidance, or fixed fees for specific types of work. Being paid to do work is normal. You can't, after all, go into a bakery and say you want to try a slice of the loaf before deciding if you're going to buy. Why should a solicitor be any different.
OP, in your circumstances, it sounds like you need a solicitor to instruct, and there's no point in delaying that, even though it costs, but you should also check to see if you're eligible for legal aid.
