Recommendations for a punchy divorce solicitor with free first half hour by email

For long reasons I cannot leave the house.
As my husband does not want to get divorced and will not want to give me any money I need a solicitor who will be assertive when I am not and to help me through.
I have paid half of the mortgage and bills.

Solicitor recommendations and any support very much appreciated.

I'd try women's aid and citizens advice rather than a private solicitor.

Thank you @UserNineNine I have already contacted them.
Unfortunately my situation is difficult and they will struggle to find me a place not because of pets or children.

Which is why I need legal advice too.

You get nothing for free.
Ask local friends - I can absolutely recommended my solicitors (in London) but they do not do anything ‘free’.

@KittyCorncrake I do not expect a free solicitor, I was asking about a free initial half hour. This is what Women’s Aid told me to find.

You'll need a local one as it will be dealt with in your local family court, if you have to go to court. Look at Google reviews? Phone a few if you can't go out. Good luck.

How do you see a free half hour consultation by email working, if I'm understanding your post correctly? Can you not physically leave the house or do you mean long-term are unable to leave/ move out? A little more clarity might help posters guide you in the right direction.

We don't do free half hours, as we're aware that people often use many solicitors in this way, and when they ask questions it's always about what another solicitor has told them, and without context, it's impossible to give accurate advice.

A half hour session is for the person to assess whether they think the solicitor can help them, and not to get specific legal advice.

We charge a fixed rate for a no obligation 45 minute telephone session - the person can provide an over view of their situation, and get basic initial advice that allows them to determine whether the solicitor is right for them or not.

We also offer the option to email a query for £25. It's just general advice on what can be done in the person's circumstances, and isn't intended as legal advice though. Lots of people like to ask a question and then feel able to cope by themselves with the answer given.

The point is, lots of solicitors do as our firm does, lower payments for initial guidance, or fixed fees for specific types of work. Being paid to do work is normal. You can't, after all, go into a bakery and say you want to try a slice of the loaf before deciding if you're going to buy. Why should a solicitor be any different.

OP, in your circumstances, it sounds like you need a solicitor to instruct, and there's no point in delaying that, even though it costs, but you should also check to see if you're eligible for legal aid.

And re needing a local solicitor (PP said this), you don't, as court representation for divorce is typically done by instructed barristers, and the solicitor will choose one that will travel to your local court (they all travel, it's their job).

Perfectly possible to have a solicitor hundreds of miles from you to do the paperwork.

I’ve found this page on Citizen’s advice. They do a live chat option but it isn’t available at weekends.

I think if I were in this situation, needing a divorce but no money for a solicitor, I’d call some and explain that. Presumably there would be an option to pay at the end when you will have money.

Is it because of location needs you will struggle to find anywhere?

I had a free half hour but it was very generic not specific to my circumstances
